When we use R-type power transformers in daily life, we pay more attention to their power and voltage ratio. We usually don’t know much about the principle of on-load voltage regulation of R-type power transformers. What is on-load voltage regulation of transformers? What kind of voltage transformation process does it use to meet the voltage requirements of our daily use?

Generally, the high-voltage winding resistor terminal of the power transformer has a tap between some turns, and the power supply is connected to different taps. The actual number of turns of the high-voltage winding resistor is different, and the number of turns of the low-voltage winding resistor is fixed. Therefore, the change of the high-voltage winding resistance constitutes a different change from the change of the low-voltage winding resistance. Depending on the use, the low-voltage group can produce different voltages as the high-voltage winding is connected to different taps.

Power transformers generally have taps that can adjust the voltage value according to actual usage, but no-load voltage adjustment is the majority, mainly because the voltage changes in some usage scenarios are not so frequent or the range is not so large, and cannot be adjusted frequently. If some equipment or usage scenarios have strict requirements on voltage, on-load voltage regulation is required.

Transformer load voltage regulation is to connect the taps to switches with arc extinguishing ability, manually or automatically adjust the external power supply, and adjust the low-voltage winding output voltage at any time by connecting these taps. It should be noted that during the adjustment process, these switches should first be connected to the required taps, and then the original connected taps should be disconnected, which is related to the voltage operating current. Like other power switches we use, the jump switch needs to be disconnected after the arc is extinguished.

Generally speaking, when the system power supply voltage changes, the primary side tap changer can be adjusted to meet the use requirements. The three-coil transformer usually meets the voltage requirements of medium and low voltage users. If the medium and low voltage system voltage is relatively stable, the medium voltage tap changer is not required.
