LPCAMM2 memory modules help notebook computers achieve faster speeds, smaller sizes, and longer battery life with higher performance, lower power consumption, and smaller form factors, and facilitate upgrades and repairs through modular design
January 18, 2024, Shanghai, China - Micron Technology, Inc. recently announced the launch of the industry's first standard low-power compressed add-on memory module (LPCAMM2), providing capacity options from 16GB to 64GB , providing PCs with higher performance, lower power consumption, more compact design space and modular design. The LPCAMM2 memory modules are sampling now, with production planned for the first half of 2024, and are the first time client PCs have been offered in a disruptive new form factor since the industry adopted small-format dual in-line memory modules (SODIMMs) in 1997. Micron's LPCAMM2 module uses LPDDR5X DRAM. Compared with SODIMM products, it can reduce power consumption by up to 61%[ ], improve performance by up to 71%, and save space by up to 64% in important PCMark®10 workloads such as web browsing and video conferencing[ ]. %[ ].
As generative artificial intelligence (GAI) use cases proliferate on client PCs, memory subsystem performance becomes increasingly important. LPCAMM2 provides PCs with the performance needed to handle artificial intelligence (AI) workloads and will expand into other applications requiring high-performance and low-power solutions in a compact, modular form factor. At the same time, LPCAMM2 also has the ability to upgrade low-power DRAM according to customer needs.
Praveen Vaidyanathan, vice president and general manager of Micron's Computing Products Group, said: "Micron is transforming the PC user experience with LPCAMM2 products, which will deliver best-in-class performance per watt in a flexible, modular form factor. Micron LPCAMM2 is the first of its kind. The product will provide stronger performance for laptops with AI functions, and the memory capacity can be continuously upgraded as technology and customer needs evolve."
As a leading member of JEDEC, Micron collaborated with mainstream client PC OEM manufacturers and ecosystem partners to jointly design and develop the LPCAMM2 form factor. In addition to product research and development, Micron's new LPCAMM2 memory module has also made many innovations in test hardware, test methods and automation technology to achieve efficient mass production. Micron LPCAMM2 also has the following advantages:
• LPDDR5X offers higher performance at up to 9600Mbps, compared to 5600Mbps for current DDR5 SODIMM[ ]
• System standby power consumption can be saved up to 80%[ ], thereby enhancing battery life
• Up to 7% performance improvement for digital content creation workloads
• Up to 15% performance improvement for productivity workloads in PCMark® 10 test[ ]
• Modularity provides enterprise IT users and administrators with critical maintenance capabilities
• Single PCB for all module capacities, providing OEM and ODM customers greater supply chain flexibility
• Motherboard wiring is simpler compared to SODIMM
• Intelligent LPCAMM2 retail product enables laptop users to upgrade system memory configurations
Yasumichi Tsukamoto, executive director and senior engineer of Lenovo's Commercial Product Solutions Development Department, said: "LPCAMM2 adopts a new dynamic form factor in the PC ecosystem, bringing higher performance and scalable memory capacity to mobile workstations and thin and light notebooks. and longer battery life. We are proud to have a strong partnership with Micron to develop and be the first to bring this flexible memory product to market. In addition to enhancing the user experience, the low-power memory used in these modules also Consistent with our goal of reducing laptop power consumption."
Dr. Dimitrios Ziakas, vice president of memory and IO technology at Intel, said: "Intel and Micron worked closely with the industry's mainstream PC leaders to restructure the client PC space by designing and developing an upgraded new platform supported by Micron's LPCAMM2 form factor. . The technical advantages of LPCAMM2 enable Intel and its ecosystem partners to advance sustainable low-power memory technology solutions and create exciting new PC designs for the AI PC era. We will continue to work with ecosystem partners to provide A solid foundation for future applications and innovations."
Li Shenghong, senior deputy general manager of Compal Computer, said: "Using large-scale language models and AI applications on edge devices such as laptops and mobile workstations is a key focus area for our future customer-centric design. Compal Computer is working closely with Micron Collaborate to design platforms using Micron's LPCAMM2 high-bandwidth, low-power, high-capacity memory solutions to advance the development of artificial intelligence."
Micron will also provide critical LPCAMM2 memory products to end customers, allowing laptop users such as gamers, business travel professionals and content creators to upgrade the memory configuration by themselves. This upgradable design is the first in the industry for low-power memory. The Yingruida LPCAMM2 product will be launched on the Yingruida official website in the first half of 2024.
