HMI is the abbreviation of human-machine interface. It provides a user-friendly operation interface for PLC control systems, I/O modules or other control systems. The human-machine interface interacts with these control systems through RS232, 485, MODBUS, CAN bus and other protocols to exchange data and control signals. Since this interaction is real-time, HMI (human-machine interface) realizes the following key functions:

1. Monitor the operation of PLC and I/O modules in real time and display them vividly on HMI;

2. The operator can send control signals to the automation equipment through the HMI, so that the automation equipment can operate according to the operator's intention.

Figure 2-1 illustrates a typical application of human-machine interface (HMI).

Typical applications of human-machine interface (HMI)

The application field of human-machine interface (HMI) determines that it must have the following characteristics:

1. The human-machine interface (HMI) must be able to exchange data with various automatic control devices. This requires the HMI to integrate various types of PLCs, I/O modules, various bus protocols and other communication protocols of automatic control devices;

2. The human-machine interface (HMI) should provide a tool software for customers to develop customized applications based on specific control systems;

3. The human-machine interface (HMI) must be an industrial-grade product that can adapt to industrial application environments and have reliable quality and excellent performance.
