According to industry insiders, although Apple may remove 3D touch sensors from all 2019 iPhone devices, the sales performance of Taiwan touch module manufacturers TPK and GIS may continue to be optimistic in the second half of 2019.
Sources said that in addition to the peak season effect, the demand for touch modules from traditional iPhone models and new iPad and MacBook devices will also provide a certain boost to the performance of touch module suppliers in the second half of the year.
The optimistic confidence of TPK and GIS comes from strong sales in the first half of the year.
In June 2019, TPK's revenue increased by 11.7% year-on-year and 68.9% year-on-year to NT$10.046 billion (US$322.05 million), a five-month high. Second-quarter revenue was NT$28.452 billion, down 8.7% from the previous quarter, but better than the previous forecast of a 15-20% decline. Year-to-date, revenue reached NT$59.608 billion, up 54.2% year-on-year.
In June 2019, GIS's revenue was NT$7.635 billion, down 0.2% from the previous month and up 0.7% from the previous year. In the second quarter, revenue was NT$23.334 billion, down 20% from the previous month. In the first half of 2019, revenue reached NT$52.77 billion, up 16.1% from the previous year.
GIS President Chou Hsien-ying said earlier that the production of touch modules for notebook computers will be increased to 1 million units per month in the second half of 2019, compared with 500,000-600,000 units in the first half. Meanwhile, during the peak season, GIS's shipments of touch solutions for tablet products are expected to reach 1.6-1.7 million units per month.
