Infineon Technologies and MediaTek have teamed up to create a digital cockpit system that they say reduces BOM costs for both hardware and software. The solution pairs the Infineon Traveo CYT4DN microcontroller with MediaTek’s entry-level Dimensity Auto SoC.
The Traveo CYT4DN MCU acts as a safety companion to the SoC, ensuring compliance with the ASIL-B safety standard for automotive instrument clusters. It monitors the contents of the SoC and takes over with reduced functionality if an error occurs, while also performing regular companion functions such as vehicle network communications.
The cockpit solution supports 1920×720 pixel resolution for the instrument panel and infotainment display. The ASIL-B-compliant Traveo MCU drives the instrument panel to ensure reliability. By running under the open source Android operating system, the Dimensity Auto SoC simplifies software, reduces software costs, and eliminates the need for a hypervisor or expensive commercial operating system. Suppliers and manufacturers can maintain and update the software themselves, further reducing costs.
Infineon and MediaTek expect that their IC portfolio will make digital cockpits affordable for all vehicles, including entry-level models.
