Leading silicon and cloud service providers collaborate to further build technology that simplifies automotive software development
• The industry-leading experience of both parties will help break down engineering technology silos and accelerate the development of software-defined vehicles for the future
Munich, September 5, 2023 - Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. and Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon, today announced at IAA Mobility that they are committed to long-term co-innovation for the entire automotive industry. Given the rapid expansion of software-defined features and functions, the exponential growth of data required to gain insights, and the demand of end customers to bring new features to market faster, AWS and Qualcomm Technologies will combine their industry expertise to provide comprehensive development infrastructure and tools to accelerate the transformation of autonomous driving and software-defined vehicles (SDVs).
“As a leader in creating innovative automotive technologies, Qualcomm Technologies understands the need to provide highly scalable solutions that combine cutting-edge cloud and hardware technologies to deliver high-quality performance and safety standards to global automakers,” said Nakul Duggal, senior vice president and general manager of automotive and cloud at Qualcomm Technologies. “Qualcomm® Cloud AI 100 solutions and Snapdragon Ride™ platforms help leading automakers enable automotive innovation . AWS offers a wide range of services and capabilities that can help unlock new possibilities for industry transformation. Through our technical collaboration with AWS, we will share excellent solutions and realize our shared vision of collaborative automotive innovation.”
To help the industry scale up automotive software development, AWS and Qualcomm Technologies have made positive progress in supporting automakers in conducting relevant experiments and integrating cloud technology into the development process. For example, Qualcomm Technologies' software stack can support the car's computer vision system to achieve advanced safety features such as automatic braking and lane assistance. Developers can take advantage of cloud technology and use the software stack to simulate, test, verify and confirm new features and functions before entering more traditional hardware testing. This helps speed up the development process and helps software engineers develop viable products faster than before.
Top luxury automakers including the BMW Group have collaborated with Qualcomm Technologies to jointly develop the next generation of intelligent driving systems based on the open, scalable and modular Snapdragon Ride platform, which integrates the Snapdragon Ride visual software stack to help vehicles achieve 360-degree perception. By working with AWS and Qualcomm Technologies, BMW Group engineers can fully leverage the leading advantages of hardware, visual software and cloud technologies on a unified and integrated end-to-end intelligent driving development platform.
With more than 20 years of experience in the automotive industry, Qualcomm Technologies is uniquely positioned to provide advanced solutions to support the industry's continued transformation toward connected cars, autonomous driving, and electrification. AWS brings its long-standing experience in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data processing and analysis, and high-performance computing. The two companies are working together to try to integrate new insights into future automotive solutions, thereby changing the way cars are designed, marketed, and driven.
“The growing adoption of software-defined development in the automotive industry is requiring automakers, Tier 1 suppliers, and vehicle developers to step up their efforts to find new ways to accelerate the vehicle design process, ” said Wendy Bauer, General Manager of Automotive and Manufacturing at AWS. “We believe the entire industry will benefit in the coming years as we learn from each other while helping mutual customers like BMW realize their visions. We are committed to continuing to explore these insights with our customers and co-innovators and turning them into actions that will shape the future of mobility.”
