Tesla delivered its first batch of vehicles equipped with HW 4.0 (Hardware 4.0) earlier this month, and now we are gradually learning more details about this new system.
Tesla Hardware 4.0 has 12 camera ports, one of which is marked as spare. All current Tesla models are equipped with nine cameras, three of which are forward-facing cameras located below the windshield, two on the fenders, two on the B-pillars, one on the rear, and one for the interior camera.
The new camera not only improves the image quality and resolution, but also increases the field of view, which is very helpful for unprotected turns and other situations. A Twitter user showed a comparison of the pictures taken at the same location by his new Model S (equipped with hardware 4.0) and the old Model Y (equipped with hardware 3.0). The results show that the new Model S can see more information in the horizontal direction, while the old Model Y can see more information in the vertical direction.
Hardware 4.0 (Part 1) vs Hardware 3.0 (Part 2)
According to IT Home, Tesla has quietly installed Hardware 4.0 on some vehicles since the beginning of this month, and plans to promote it to more models in the future. With the synergy of Hardware 4.0 and the server-side fully autonomous driving function, Tesla's autonomous driving level is expected to be significantly improved.
