The symbol projection area (highlighted as the HR graphic area in Figure 4) can help the driver navigate to a destination, warn the driver of potentially hazardous road conditions or project the vehicle's intended route. Symbol projection not only provides an alternative method of vehicle communication but can be a differentiating factor in vehicle functionality and driving experience. Symbol projection demonstrates the versatility of DLP technology for high-resolution headlights and how it can expand the value proposition of vehicle lighting systems.

Headlight applications for the future

While DLP technology has greatly improved ADB systems and enabled symbol projection with its high resolution, there are other ways for DLP technology-based headlamps to improve advanced driver assistance system  (ADAS) functionality for vehicles by expanding their applications. Add value. These future-proof applications may include structured light (to help next-generation ADAS better detect and identify objects and obstacles on the road), traffic sign dimming (to prevent front-facing camera glare), and weather detection (for reminders) Potentially hazardous road conditions for drivers).

Structured light. The DMD is able to switch states extremely quickly, on the order of microseconds - enabling DLP headlight modules to display single-bit patterns in a very short time. When these single-bit patterns are synchronized with the vehicle's front-facing camera refresh rate, DLP headlight modules can project patterns intended for use as depth sensing without attracting the driver's attention. This application is called structured light. The ADAS processor uses the front-facing camera to capture responses to patterns and determine if there are any objects in the vehicle's path. If the ADAS system detects any debris or potholes, it can warn the driver of the hazard through a symbol projection feature. This is depicted in Figures 4 and 6, which show the original driving scenario, in which the DLP headlight and front camera system identifies potholes and warns the driver.

Figure 6. DLP headlights work in conjunction with ADAS camera systems to detect objects on the road and warn the driver.

In addition to pothole and debris detection, structured light can also improve the performance of active suspension systems at night. Many active suspension systems perform poorly at night due to poor system visibility, but DLP headlights can greatly improve the performance of active suspension systems.

Traffic sign dimming. OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers want to move ADAS front camera sensors near or inside the headlights. One disadvantage of this new location is that the performance of the ADAS camera system may be degraded near traffic signs at night. If adaptive headlights reflect light directly back to the light source, traffic signs can interfere with the performance and accuracy of ADAS front-facing cameras at night. When light shines directly on a camera's lens, the camera sensor can "bloom," or become oversaturated, completely washing out the image. This prevents any real-world data from reaching the ADAS system, so the driver cannot be warned of potential hazards. Leveraging the high resolution of DLP headlight modules, ADAS systems can create efficient masking and extinguish the light hitting traffic signs. This enables the vehicle's front-end camera ADAS system to function properly, allowing drivers to better understand traffic signs. Traffic sign dimming is a must-have feature for ADB when used on city streets and highways, as traffic signs appear frequently on these types of roads. Figure 7 depicts a DLP headlight that dims a traffic sign but illuminates a child trying to cross the street.

Figure 7. DLP headlights prominently illuminate a child trying to cross the street while dimming crosswalk signs to reduce glare.

Weather detection. High-resolution headlights can be used to help detect weather conditions while driving at night. Some vehicles can detect weather during the day with just cameras, but this is a problem at night because there is not enough light at night. With high-resolution headlights, vehicles can increase the intensity of light hitting specific areas, helping to improve camera visibility. By enabling the vehicle's ADAS front-facing camera system to detect weather conditions at night, the vehicle can automatically enable safety features or configurations to better handle hazardous conditions including fog and icy roads.

in conclusion

While the DLP5533A-Q1 DMD is designed to increase ADB resolution and help vehicles maximize the amount of light on the road, the device's 1.3 million micromirrors enable new applications. Symbol projection can help drivers keep their eyes on the road by projecting navigation symbols in front of the car, and can help the vehicle "communicate" with surrounding vehicles by projecting predetermined lines. Structured light enables features in vehicles that warn drivers of impending hazards, such as potholes and objects on the road. Traffic sign dimming can help reduce front camera glare and support appropriate ADAS functionality. Weather detection helps drivers keep their eyes on the road at the most critical moments. DLP high-resolution headlamps will continue to meet the needs of OEMs and Tier 1 headlamp suppliers while providing designers with a platform to innovate and develop new features.
