According to foreign media reports, Ford will import low-cost lithium iron phosphate batteries from CATL for use in North American electric pickups and SUVs (currently F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E), and a series of agreements between Ford and CATL will ensure Ford's battery supply for the next 10 years.
Earlier, there were reports that CATL was looking for a location in the United States to produce electric vehicle power batteries to serve Ford and BMW. Ford Vice President Lisa Drake said the company plans to start building a new 40GWh lithium iron phosphate battery factory in North America in 2026, but Drake did not disclose whether the factory would be built by CATL.
As for CATL, it is worth mentioning that the company recently launched the M3P battery developed based on a new material system. Its energy density is higher than that of lithium iron phosphate and its cost is better than that of ternary batteries. Therefore, it is a compromise between lithium iron phosphate and ternary lithium. CATL calls it "ternary phosphate system."
