Semiconductor IP supplier Rambus has expanded its business scope in recent years to provide semiconductor chips for new technologies. Now, according to foreign media reports, Rambus has launched an embedded hardware security module that has passed ISO certification for key automotive safety systems.

The module, named RT-640 Embedded HSM, is a Hardware Root of Trust solution certified to Automotive Safety Integrity Level B (ASIL-B) according to ISO 26262:2018 international standard. The hardware allows automakers to comply with functional safety requirements without having to re-certify their hardware in accordance with ISO standards. As a result, the component allows automakers to accelerate time to market when designing critical advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
Now, automotive electronics manufacturers are creating complex single-chip system (SoC) devices for ADAS, replacing discrete safety processor components with comprehensive IP and software that meet ISO 26262 certification. According to Rambus, by providing ready-to-integrate, ASIL-certified solutions, engineers can focus on their automotive safety applications, thereby accelerating time to market.
The module enables Rambus to provide a full set of security services to the main CPU, including secure boot, secure runtime integrity, remote authentication, and extensive cryptographic acceleration. The embedded RISC-V CPU can support third-party applications within the trust boundary. The module also provides a hardware-enforced firewall, tamper detection, and protection against side-channel attacks.
As the number of electronic components in cars continues to increase and connectivity becomes more important, security has become a key issue. Many vehicle functions need to be protected from security vulnerabilities, including gateways, control units, engines, powertrains, autonomous driving systems, camera sensors, lidar, radar, in-vehicle infotainment and experience systems, and network connectivity.
Neeraj Paliwal, general manager of Rambus safety IP, said the module is part of Rambus' strategy to occupy the automotive safety market at multiple levels. Rambus is currently working with Tier 1 automotive OEM component suppliers, semiconductor and system companies to serve the automotive market, and is also working directly with automotive companies. Currently, the company provides both IP and hardware solutions.
