Bosch Group has selected the R&S CMP200 wireless communication tester from Rohde & Schwarz to verify ultra-wideband (UWB) applications in automotive production. This project is a continuation of the long-term cooperation between Bosch and Rohde & Schwarz in the field of wireless communications.
Rohde & Schwarz adds UWB test capability to R&S CMP200 radio communication tester
With greater coverage, lower energy consumption and good security, ultra-wideband (UWB) has the potential to power a large number of IoT peripherals and Industry 4.0 applications, and is expected to become a standard technology for most smartphones. In the automotive field, UWB is more convenient and supports safer applications, such as vehicles equipped with keyless entry systems that can use smartphones as digital keys. More advanced features include valet parking, parking space occupancy detection and even vital sign monitoring of babies in child seats.
UWB technology is developed based on IEEE 802.15.4a and 802.15.4z standards, supporting centimeter-level precision positioning and an effective monitoring range of up to 70 meters. The technology also supports secure data communications at rates up to 27 Mbps with extremely low power consumption. The bandwidth of more than 500 MHz combined with very low spectral power density enables UWB signals to share spectrum with other technologies without causing interference.
It is very important to test the performance of UWB devices in the laboratory and production line to ensure their compliance, normal function and accurate positioning. As a leader in wireless device testing, Rohde & Schwarz provides comprehensive UWB test solutions for R&D, certification, chip characteristics and production, which can accurately measure key parameters such as time of flight (ToF) and angle of arrival (AoA). In addition, Rohde & Schwarz has also joined FiRa and the Internet of Vehicles Alliance to support the interoperability of UWB global cross-industry standards.
Rohde & Schwarz has integrated UWB test functionality into the R&S CMP200 wireless communication tester, making it the only platform on the market that can provide R&D and production RF testing for 5G mmWave/FR2 and UWB functions. It is also ideal for overcoming UWB test challenges in mass production and R&D. The CMP200 combines the functions of a signal analyzer and a signal generator in one. Combined with the Rohde & Schwarz shielded chamber and automation software WMT, the R&S CMP200 provides a complete solution for transmitter, receiver, ToF and AoA measurements in conducted and radiated modes in accordance with IEEE 802.15.4a/z specifications.
"We are pleased to be able to provide Bosch, one of the world's leading suppliers of automotive electronics, with wireless connectivity test solutions," said Juergen Meyer, Vice President of the Automotive Test Division at Rohde & Schwarz. "Our R&S CMP200 wireless communication tester and our OTA test chamber are the right choice for the test coverage and reliability required by the automotive industry. The system can also be used to test 5G connectivity."
“This collaboration promotes industry-wide standards such as ultra-wideband for communication between cars and smartphones,” said Markus Hetzel, manufacturing engineer at Bosch. “Testing the performance of UWB devices in the lab and on the production line is important to ensure compatibility and correct operation.”
