Recently, high-nickel ternary batteries with an energy density of 302Wh/kg have begun mass production at Guoxuan High-tech. It is reported that this battery has been equipped with a number of mid-to-high-end electric vehicles, and the system energy density of related models has easily exceeded 200Wh/kg. As the first domestic mass production and application in a number of mid-to-high-end models, Guoxuan High-tech may lead the industry to bring the energy density of single cells to the 300Wh/kg threshold, further eliminating people's anxiety about the range of electric vehicles.


It is reported that Gotion High-tech's 302Wh/kg high energy density battery is achieved through battery material innovation, lightweight design, process optimization and other means. "While keeping the battery volume unchanged, we use lightweight and other technologies to reduce the weight of auxiliary materials and increase the proportion of active substances, which greatly improves the energy density. The energy density can be increased by up to 25% compared with the existing mainstream ternary battery, giving the vehicle a longer driving range." said the relevant project leader of Gotion High-tech Industrial Research Institute.


In terms of cathode materials, Gotion High-tech's technical research and development team has achieved the stability of high-nickel cathode materials and improved the cycle performance of high-nickel cathode materials through uniformity technology, doping technology, nano-surface modification technology, and lithium insertion and extraction crystal surface growth control technology.


In addition, by constructing a "point-line-surface" conductive network based on the positive and negative electrode plates, the full battery rate and cycle performance are improved. In fact, the energy density exceeding 300Wh/kg is not the only major highlight of this battery.


In terms of safety, Guoxuan's high-tech research and development team has developed a composite electrolyte system that combines film-forming, high-voltage resistance and flame-retardant functions by designing non-flammable fluorinated solvents and ionic liquid additives based on molecular simulation. This system effectively inhibits side reactions between the electrolyte and the positive and negative electrode materials, greatly improving the safety performance of the entire battery.


In addition to the design of materials and battery cells, in terms of modules, the thermal runaway safety problem at the module level is solved through exhaust channels, heat separation between battery cells and module sealing design, so that the module only smokes but does not catch fire;


In terms of battery system safety design, the thermal barrier and exhaust design between modules solves the thermal runaway safety problem at the system level, and also ensures that the system "only smokes, not catches fire". In recent years, Gotion High-tech has always adhered to the positioning of a technology-based enterprise and the strategic plan of "making iron-lithium products refined and ternary products strong". While making fine iron-lithium products, it continues to focus on ternary products. The mass production of 302Wh/kg this time is a reflection of the company's research and development and strength in the field of ternary batteries.


According to Battery China, Guoxuan High-tech has built a 1GWh smart factory for 302Wh/kg high-nickel ternary batteries. The smart factory has introduced an ultra-wide double-sided coating system, an ultra-fast stacking winding system, etc.


In addition, the company's technical team has also developed a power battery formation system and an ultra-fast power battery activation process, and independently developed a full-process product traceability system in combination with the MES system, constructed a slurry homogenization model, and achieved a high degree of consistency between the binder and conductive agent network in the direction perpendicular to the pole piece during pole drying. It has also developed a power battery manufacturing process cleaning system and power battery aging technology, and combined with the multi-level safety protection mechanism of the power battery system to achieve intelligent and safe manufacturing of battery products.


According to relevant persons in charge of Guoxuan High-tech, the successful development and application of battery cells with an energy density of 302Wh/kg has provided the company with experience and technical accumulation for the development of the next generation of battery cells with an energy density exceeding 360Wh/kg. The company will provide domestic and international high-end customers with higher-end battery cell products through continuous iteration and upgrading of raw materials and battery cell technologies, as well as further improvement of technologies such as intelligent production equipment.
