Following the pace of the times, the emergence of new energy has completely broken the transformation of the automobile market, and the advancement of new projects (new energy) has brought constant problems. From the engine to the electric motor, the internal consumption also allows the battery pack to successfully replace the source of air pollution, gasoline, so these are also the main contents of this short article - the battery pack of new energy vehicles.
Since the birth of new energy, the safety technology of power batteries has become the focus of attention of various car companies. After many accidents, there is still no solution to battery thermal runaway. However, the inability to solve the problem does not mean that we will stand still. To date, BYD, GAC and Great Wall Motors have launched their own independently developed battery safety technologies, and the representative batteries are blade batteries, magazine batteries and Dayu batteries. Today, let's take a look at the differences between the batteries of these three companies and which one is safer?
First, the Dayu battery from Great Wall Motors is the newest product. It is not too long before it is released, so let's take a look at its performance. Although it has not been recognized by users and has not received much praise, the test videos and pictures released by Great Wall Motors show that Great Wall Motors tests the thermal runaway of batteries by heating them.
The temperature in the test kept rising, putting pressure on the battery. When the temperature reached 1037°C, the Dayu battery experienced thermal runaway of multiple cells three times in a row. From this data, 1037°C is already a very remarkable achievement, which fully guarantees the safety after the collision. Of course, these are just the superficial parameters of the Dayu battery. It is still unknown whether there will be any new problems in the actual use.
To be honest, I am personally very interested in this newly launched battery, so I read a lot of information online, and finally found that Dayu Battery Technology has dozens of independently developed patented technologies. Breaking through the battery's inherent PACK design, BMS 3, and other 39 thermal runaway fault nodes, through eight new design concepts such as heat source isolation, two-way commutation, directional explosion disposal, high-temperature insulation, heat flow distribution, and automatic fire extinguishing, the thermal runaway safety matrix is further expanded. During the normal life cycle of the battery, it can ensure that "large-capacity high-nickel cells", "any position in the battery pack", "heating two cells and continuously triggering thermal runaway" can all achieve no fire, explosion, or spontaneous combustion accidents.
To sum up, Dayu Battery has made comprehensive improvements in five dimensions: battery cells, data, design, simulation, and testing. Although it has not completely solved the thermal runaway problem, it has ensured the safety of the battery to a great extent.
The remaining blade and clip batteries of BYD and GAC have actually been on the market for a long time and have been installed in many models. In the actual experience of users, not only has the endurance degradation in winter been improved, but the safety has also been significantly improved.
Then you can also find the test results of blade batteries and clip batteries on the Internet. Both of them use needle penetration tests, which are not the testing methods used for Dayu batteries. Their methods are just as the name suggests, using iron nails to pierce the inside of the battery pack to simulate the effect of an actual collision.
The performance of the clip battery in the test was quite good. After being punctured, the battery began to smoke, with the highest temperature reaching 686.7℃. The internal structure was intact and there was no fire or explosion. After removing the outer shell, only the punctured part was damaged, and there was no change in other places.
Since BYD's blade batteries were produced earlier, they were tested using the old national standard "Safety Requirements for Power Batteries for Electric Vehicles" in 2015. The old national standard tests the battery cells themselves; the magazine battery and Dayu battery test the entire battery pack, so the blade battery test is somewhat different from the former. After the blade battery cell was pierced by a steel needle, the battery voltage dropped, there was no spark, smoke or electrolyte spraying at the puncture site, the battery shell did not bulge, and the surface temperature of the battery shell was 30℃-60℃. In the extrusion test, the blade battery did not catch fire or explode when it was deformed by 30% and left for one hour.
In the puncture test of two ternary lithium batteries, the heating test of Dayu battery is more difficult. But surprisingly, the temperature reached the limit of Dayu battery at 1037℃. In fact, the internal density, technology, design, etc. of the three batteries are not particularly interpreted in the article. After all, the battery pack has been developed for several years, and a short article cannot fully interpret all the details. But from the test results and test intensity, my personal classification is blade battery> clip battery丨Dayu battery.
Blade Battery
The reason why Dayu batteries did not appear in the comparison between the two is that Dayu batteries have not yet been put into use in vehicle models, and we cannot easily draw conclusions based on a video or a piece of data. However, blade batteries and clip batteries have long been used in vehicle models. After time and user inspections, the actual situation is obvious to everyone.
Why are blade batteries better than clip batteries?
The first point can be seen from the actual test that there is an extrusion test in the BYD experiment. Extrusion is the most normal phenomenon in an actual collision. After extrusion, BYD's blade battery remains intact and does not catch fire or explode. This shows that BYD is still confident in its own batteries. As for why the clip battery was not tested, it is unknown.
The second point is user reputation. It is said that BYD is a car company that started out as a battery manufacturer, so its understanding of batteries is much higher than that of the other two. It is not difficult to see from the reputation it has gained in the market that its safety factor is still very trustworthy to users. So do you agree with this result?
