Microchip Releases New ISO 26262 Functional Safety Package for dsPIC®, PIC18® and AVR® MCUs to Simplify Design of ASIL B and ASIL C Safety Applications
Microchip’s certified functional safety solutions accelerate development and certification of automotive safety applications
To provide reliable protection for vehicle operation and end users, safety has always been the top priority in automotive applications. Microchip Technology Inc. (Microchip Technology) now offers a new certified functional safety package that enables engineers to develop products in accordance with the ISO 26262 functional safety standard. Microchip officially released the ISO 26262 functional safety package for dsPIC33C digital signal controllers (DSC), PIC18 and AVR microcontrollers (MCUs) to accelerate the development of safety-critical designs for ASIL B and ASIL C safety levels and certifications.
The complete functional safety ecosystem for dsPIC33C digital signal controllers includes:
• AEC Q100 Grade 0 certified functional safety-ready dsPIC33C digital signal controllers with dedicated hardware safety features
• ASIL B Ready Failure Modes, Effects and Diagnostic Analysis (FMEDA) report and Functional Safety Manual (FSM) certified by SGS TÜV Saar
• TÜV Rheinland-certified functional safety diagnostic library for designs up to ASIL C
• A functional safety reference application showing the steps required to develop a compliant design and the dependent functions that must be generated for compliance (ASIL B or ASIL C)
• Various functional safety analysis reports and certification reports to help simplify compliance and certification
The complete functional safety ecosystem for PIC18 and AVR microcontrollers includes:
• AEC Q100 Grade 1 certified functional safety-ready PIC18-Q84 MCU with Controller Area Network Flexible Data-rate (CAN FD) and AVR DA MCU with Local Interconnect Network (LIN) interface, both with hardware support for capacitive touch sensors
• ASIL B Ready Failure Modes, Effects and Diagnostic Analysis (FMEDA) report and Functional Safety Manual (FSM) certified by SGS TÜV Saar
• Functional safety diagnostic library
• ASIL B Ready certificate and certification report to help simplify compliance and certification
Whether engineers are new to ISO 26262 functional safety or experienced experts, Microchip has proven experience and solutions to help them meet functional safety requirements and certify their designs while minimizing cost, risk and development time. With the functional safety packages listed below and the development tools that come with the safety documentation, engineers can develop compliant systems.
Microchip offers three ISO 26262 functional safety packages for purchase to help customers at different levels of expertise and at different stages of the evaluation and design cycle.
• The Functional Safety Foundation Package provides basic resources such as ASIL B Ready certified failure modes, effects and diagnostic analysis and safety manuals for customers to start evaluating target functional safety levels and designing safety-critical automotive applications.
• The Functional Safety Starter Pack provides ASIL B Ready certified failure modes, effects and diagnostics analysis and safety manuals, a reference application and ASIL C-compliant diagnostic library to help designers understand the development process for ISO 26262 and the reports that must be generated for compliance.
• The Functional Safety Deluxe Pack provides a complete solution for both novices and experienced experts, simplifying the design and certification of safety-critical automotive applications. In addition to the products included in the Starter Pack, the Deluxe Pack includes a certified diagnostic library with source code and associated safety analysis reports for designs targeting ASIL C.
In addition to the functional safety package, Microchip also provides a TÜV SÜD-certified design tool kit for its MPLAB® development tool ecosystem to simplify tool qualification. This includes the TÜV SÜD-certified MPLAB XC functional safety compiler and TÜV SÜD certificate, the compiler's functional safety manual, and the compiler, MPLAB X Integrated Development Environment (IDE), MPLAB code coverage and safety plans for all MPLAB development ecosystem programs and a complete tool classification and qualification report. Microchip also provides functional safety-ready CAN FD and LIN transceivers and other supporting devices including voltage supervisors, which can be used in various automotive applications with functional safety-ready digital signal controllers and microcontrollers.
“As vehicles become more complex and electronic, functional safety requirements in automotive designs become more stringent,” said Joe Thomsen, vice president of Microchip’s MCU16 business unit. “To help our customers quickly develop safety applications with minimal risk and budget, Microchip has significantly expanded its offering of certified safety documentation and diagnostic self-test libraries, development tools and technical support. As a key supplier to the automotive market, we will continue to expand our functional safety support to help our customers gain a competitive advantage.”
“As a functional safety certification body, TÜV Rheinland provides independent audit, verification, assessment and certification services related to ISO 26262 and IEC 61508 to support quality and safety,” said Thomas Steffens, Head of Functional Safety and Cybersecurity at TÜV Rheinland. “Based on the results of our assessments based on the ISO 26262 certification program, we confirm that the safety diagnostic library for Microchip’s dsPIC33C digital signal controller family meets the requirements for ASIL C and can therefore be used in automotive safety-related applications targeting ASIL C.”
Development Tools
Tool qualification is made easier with the TÜV SÜD-certified MPLAB XC16 and MPLAB XC8 Functional Safety Compilers (SW006022-FS and SW006021-FS), MPLAB Code Coverage Tool (SW006026-COV), MPLAB X IDE, MPLAB Development Ecosystem debugger/programmers and Safety Documentation Package that fully support ISO 26262 Functional Safety-Ready dsPIC33C digital signal controllers, as well as PIC18 and AVR microcontrollers.
