Recently, the 2021 China-Germany Automotive Conference was grandly opened in Jilin. As a representative of cylindrical battery companies, one of the mainstream technical routes of new energy power batteries , BAK Battery was invited to attend the conference. Dr. Lin Jian, chief scientist of BAK Battery, delivered a keynote speech on the research and development and application of BAK's large cylindrical high-energy density batteries.
Lin Jian revealed that BYD's full-tab large cylindrical product applied a new generation of positive and negative electrode materials and structural design, and achieved a three-fold improvement in fast charging performance while taking into account energy density. The product development progress was in line with expectations, the sample test results met customer needs, and some performance was better than expected.

"Rapid development" and "accelerated change" are the keywords for the current development of new energy vehicles . According to global new energy passenger vehicle sales data released by cleantechnica, in August 2021, global new energy passenger vehicle sales reached 516,400 units, a significant increase of 114% year-on-year, of which pure electric vehicle sales were 365,000 units, accounting for 5.4% of the global automobile market.
Under such a booming opportunity, the power battery, which is related to the energy supply of the entire vehicle and is known as the "heart" of new energy vehicles, also shows amazing market potential and an industry trend of technology-driven change. Chinese power battery companies have demonstrated outstanding competitiveness in the global market and have accounted for nearly half of the global power battery installed capacity.
At the beginning of this year, BAK achieved the domestic debut of the 4680 full-tab large cylindrical battery, and its technology layout and R&D progress are leading the industry. The full-tab large cylindrical technology has obvious advantages in performance, cost, safety and other aspects, and can push the optimal balance point between energy density, cost and safety to a new position. On the premise of ensuring the safety of the entire battery pack, it can increase the size of the single cell, improve space utilization, and increase the vehicle's range .
On the premise of ensuring energy density, BAK optimizes the structural design of large cylindrical batteries through full-pole ear technology, greatly reducing impedance, and the fast charging performance can be improved by three times compared with conventional single-pole ear batteries.

Looking at the whole pack, using large-sized battery cells can reduce the number of battery cells and the corresponding number of structural parts in the whole pack, thereby improving weight energy density, simplifying BMS, and reducing the overall industrial cost of the battery pack.
From the perspective of the entire vehicle, the use of large cylindrical batteries with full-ear tabs can effectively improve performance, reduce costs, and further improve safety, making it possible to truly achieve zero battery accidents. It is undoubtedly the mainstream technology for the next generation of cylindrical batteries.
Lin Jian said: "Through the optimization of positive and negative electrode materials and structural design, the development progress of BAK's full-electrode large cylindrical products is in line with expectations. At present, the products have been sent to some customers for sampling. On the basis of meeting customer needs, the test results show that some performance is better than expected. Taking high-end automotive batteries as the entry point, the terminal market has considerable demand for large cylindrical cells. BAK firmly believes that full-electrode large cylindrical cells will become the next generation of mainstream cylindrical products. We will continue to work hard in this field to make higher-quality cells the strong 'heart' of new energy vehicles."
