It is reported that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (TSMC)'s second-quarter 2021 financial report showed that its sales increased by 20%, mainly driven by chip demand in industries such as automobiles.
TSMC's second-quarter sales for the period ended June were NT$372.1 billion (about RMB 86.04 billion), in line with analysts' average forecast of NT$371.3 billion. Revenue for the quarter was NT$148.5 billion (about RMB 33.59 billion), up 23% from the same period last year.
“Against the backdrop of tight capacity, TSMC’s better pricing power should largely offset margin pressure caused by massive capital expenditures,” Citi analysts wrote in a recent report. “At the same time, TSMC’s technological and productivity breakthroughs in extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) will also be able to widen the company’s technology gap with its peers and ensure a better cost structure for leading technology nodes.”
Earlier this week, companies such as Daimler and Jaguar Land Rover warned that continued chip shortages would further suppress sales. Jaguar Land Rover even said that second-quarter deliveries would be 50% lower than initially expected. One of TSMC's competitors, UMC, recently said that the situation where chip demand exceeds supply will continue until 2023.
