According to data from the well-known analysis agency Strategy Analytics, German chip supplier Infineon surpassed in 2020 to become the world's largest automotive semiconductor supplier.

The report further stated that the top five suppliers including Infineon, NXP and Renesas, Texas Instruments and STMicroelectronics accounted for nearly 49% of the global automotive semiconductor market in 2020. On the other hand, the "others" category includes more than 45 companies, accounting for about 16% of the automotive semiconductor market in 2020.

Strategy Analytics also estimates that automotive semiconductor supplier revenue will fall 6.0% year-over-year in 2020, from $37.2 billion in 2019 to $35 billion.

"The global automotive semiconductor market in 2020 was impacted by the global COVID-19 pandemic in the first half of the year, but pent-up demand triggered a strong recovery, enabling strong revenue growth for automotive semiconductor suppliers and minimizing the overall year-on-year decline," noted Asif Anwar, author of the report and director of PBCS service at Strategy Analytics.

“However, Infineon was the only company in the top five to grow both revenue and market share, with Cypress Semiconductor helping Infineon consolidate its position as the number one automotive semiconductor supplier.”

“The demand pipeline for 2021 remains strong as semiconductor companies continue to catch up, and automotive semiconductor industry players are expected to enjoy a period of sustained revenue and earnings growth,” Mr. Anwar concluded.

NXP tops the 2019 ranking

According to a 2019 report by Strategy Analytics, the top five automotive semiconductor manufacturers in terms of market share in 2019 were NXP, Infineon, Renesas, Texas Instruments and STMicroelectronics.

The report shows that the total revenue of automotive semiconductor manufacturers in 2019 fell by 1.3% year-on-year to US$37.2 billion, with NXP, Infineon, Renesas, Texas Instruments and STMicroelectronics maintaining the top five positions. NXP and Infineon have very close revenues, while STMicroelectronics is the only company among the top five manufacturers with an increase in revenue.

Ian Riches, vice president of the Global Automotive Practice (GAP) at Strategy Analytics, noted at the time, “Global demand for automotive semiconductors continued to slow in 2019 as vehicle production was flat or declining in all major regions, including China. This was partially offset by revenue opportunities from high-growth applications such as ADAS, electrified powertrains, and wireless connectivity. However, this was not enough to translate into revenue growth for automotive semiconductor manufacturers in 2019.”

Asif Anwar, Director of Strategy Analytics and author of the report, added, “Our analysis shows that while many companies struggled to grow revenue in 2019, Bosch, Micron, Nexperia, nVIDIA, Qualcomm and Xilinx all saw significant revenue growth. We will see significant changes in market share rankings. In 2019, Infineon announced that it had reached a definitive agreement to acquire Cypress. The acquisition was successfully completed in April 2020 and will effectively drive Infineon’s long-term development.”
