On April 3, according to foreign media reports, Porsche R&D Director Michael Steiner said in an interview with the media that the brand will cooperate with partners to produce high-voltage batteries for its future models.
Michael Steiner said that existing battery suppliers will focus on increasing production and ignore more specialized needs (such as Porsche's personalized needs), so Porsche may need to look elsewhere for batteries that suit its needs.
Porsche is working with battery startup Custom Cells to produce specialized batteries through the joint venture Cellforce. Custom Cells has factories in Izhau and Tübingen.
Michael Steiner said, "We very much want to apply high-power batteries to motorsport and, if feasible, eventually to high-performance road cars. But in the huge changes sweeping the industry, there is often little room for special requirements for batteries. At present, most of our battery partners are just focused on increasing production lines, so our special needs are not currently their priority."
Some external information can give us a glimpse into Porsche's choice of power batteries.
Not long ago, Porsche announced that it was working on its own battery cell technology, using a silicon anode instead of a graphite anode, which would allow the battery pack to operate comfortably at higher temperatures, making it suitable for high-performance applications.
At the beginning of the year, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said that cylindrical batteries are an important direction for the future of power batteries. Based on this, we are studying high-power, high-density batteries. We will invest in these batteries, and when we have high-power batteries suitable for sports cars, we will launch new racing cars.
Gaogong Lithium Battery also knows some relevant information. When it comes to battery selection for electric racing cars and supercars, Porsche does prefer cylindrical batteries. A domestic cylindrical battery company revealed that it is doing corresponding early research and development support with Porsche.
