The China Electric Vehicle Hundred People Forum (2021) has kicked off. At this forum, relevant people from all walks of life expressed their opinions, injected more advanced ideas into China's new energy vehicle industry, and promoted the development of China's new energy vehicle industry. According to Cheshu, Wang Chuanfu, chairman of BYD Co., Ltd., made several suggestions for the development of the industry, including increasing the attention to plug-in hybrid products and including needle penetration tests in mandatory standards.

At the forum, Wang Chuanfu said that he wanted to bring back the battery puncture test and increase the difficulty: the puncture test is a very effective and demanding method in power battery testing. The old version of the national standard "Safety Requirements and Test Methods for Power Batteries for Electric Vehicles" in 2015 clearly stipulates that single batteries should not explode or catch fire during the puncture test. Therefore, we suggest that the puncture test of power batteries be gradually included in the mandatory standards, and at the same time, the current requirement for thermal diffusion test should be increased from no less than 5 minutes to no less than 30 minutes.

The thermal runaway time proposed by Wang Chuanfu is much higher than the current regulatory requirements, and his confidence comes from the quality of the blade battery itself. BYD has tested ternary lithium batteries, lithium iron phosphate batteries and blade batteries on the same platform. In the same needle puncture test, the surface temperature of the ternary lithium battery reached 500 degrees Celsius, and violent combustion occurred; the surface temperature of the lithium iron phosphate battery was 200-400 degrees Celsius, with smoke but no open flame; the surface temperature of the blade battery was only 30-60 degrees Celsius, and there was no smoke or open flame.

Uncle Che believes that it is necessary to include the needle puncture test in the power battery test, because it is closely related to the life safety of the user. The needle puncture test is like a magic mirror that can clearly help consumers identify product quality. Uncle Che supports Wang Chuanfu's proposal.
