Recently, German battery manufacturer Voltabox announced a new concept technology that can produce lithium-ion batteries in any shape. This technology, called Flow-Shape-Design (FSD), is based on plastic curing technology and can encapsulate batteries with plastic materials.

The purpose of this technology is to make the battery pack more flexible to fit more installation locations and spaces, and to further reduce the weight of the entire battery module and even the final manufacturing cost. Voltabox said that with FSD, it is no longer necessary to use traditional metal shell welding or gluing technology to fix the battery cells, but to use this self-curing plastic to complete the final packaging, so that the battery can be arranged in a narrower space.

Voltabox expects to demonstrate the technology in the summer of 2021, and the company will officially deliver the first battery systems made with FSD technology to customers at that time. In addition, the company also plans to license the technology to customers in different markets around the world. To this end, Voltabox has applied for technical patent protection for the technology around the world.

The relevant person in charge of Voltabox said that this FSD technology from the aerospace field will bring revolutionary changes to the entire battery industry. "The mass production of this technology will be adapted to various forms of battery cells. At the same time, the characteristics of self-curing plastics determine that they have stronger drop and shock resistance than traditional metal materials, so the protection of battery cells will be better."

In addition, the company's Chief Financial Officer Patrick Zabel also said: "We have solved the key limiting factors of using lithium-ion battery technology, such as weight, system price and complex production methods." In addition, the significant reduction in the number of individual components, low material costs and relatively simple manufacturing processes make pricing more attractive than current market levels.
