As a selected supplier of visual sensing technology for Ford's advanced driver assistance systems, Mobileye will provide the EyeQ series of devices and visual processing software to support Level 1 and Level 2 driver assistance systems in Ford's global vehicles.
The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) defines L1 systems as automating only a single part of the driving experience, such as automatic steering or acceleration/deceleration, while L2 systems can provide steering and acceleration/braking support. Both systems require the driver to monitor the vehicle's performance.
Ford will put the Mobileye name in front of customers by placing the Mobileye logo on its SYNC driver-assist display, and customers will be aware for the first time that Ford is building some of the features of Ford Co-Pilot360 technology on top of Mobileye’s sensing technology.
As part of the high-volume agreement, new production Ford vehicles will use Mobileye’s EyeQ computer chips and software to power features in Ford Co-Pilot360 technology. Mobileye’s technology will be used to help accurately identify objects such as lane markings, traffic signs, pedestrians and other vehicles seen by the vehicle’s windshield camera to power features such as lane keeping systems, automatic high-beam headlights, Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control, and Active Drive Assist with Hands-Free Driving on the all-new Mustang Mach-E and F-150.
Ford will use Mobileye's technology throughout the life of next-generation Ford vehicles such as the F-150 and Mustang Mach-E, as well as future products that offer advanced driver assistance system capabilities.
While Ford has been working with Mobileye for many years, this is the first time Ford has committed to using the latter's technology throughout the life of its next-generation vehicles. The two companies will work with designated Ford Tier 1 suppliers to supply supporting technology for vehicle integration.
Ford is also evaluating the use of Roadbook in its vehicles. Roadbook uses anonymous, crowdsourced data from vehicle cameras to build high-definition maps that can be accessed by vehicles and used by driver assistance technologies, including hands-free driving features such as Active Drive Assist.
New Ford production vehicles will use Mobileye's EyeQ3 and EyeQ4 software in L1 and L2 advanced driver assistance system platforms. The EyeQ series stands out from the competition by supporting complex and computationally intensive visual processing tasks while maintaining low power consumption even for automotive windshields. Building on the capabilities of the previous generation of software, EyeQ4 is able to process multiple sensors and other inputs required for driver assistance functions.
