ON Semiconductor Automotive Key Market Solutions and Strategies
As one of the world's top ten leading suppliers of high-efficiency automotive silicon solutions, ON Semiconductor has a strong momentum in the development of automotive electronics, with revenue increasing by nearly 300% compared to a few years ago. In particular, its market share in the fields of automotive image sensors and AFS has remained the world's number one. ON Semiconductor will continue to provide a comprehensive product lineup and solutions based on the development trends of the automotive market and continue to promote automotive innovation.
Vehicle Electrification
As governments and consumers put forward increasingly stringent requirements for automobile fuel efficiency, energy conservation, pollution reduction, and environmental protection, various new energy vehicles such as HEV/EV/PHEV have been vigorously developed. ON Semiconductor provides field-stop IGBTs, high-efficiency FETs, power integrated modules, gate drivers, intelligent power modules, application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), application-specific standard products (ASSPs) and other products to support automotive electrification. The development of new energy vehicles first requires the conversion of various energies. In order to continuously improve the efficiency of various energy conversions, ON Semiconductor focuses on strengthening innovation in the following aspects:
1. Develop various energy-efficient power electronic devices, such as high-power IGBTs and power MOSFETs with extremely low on-resistance, to reduce switching losses and thus improve the efficiency of converting electrical energy to mechanical energy. Taking the power integrated module (PIM) NXH80T120L2Q0PG as an example, it uses ON Semiconductor's proprietary trench second-generation field-stop technology (FSII) and innovative packaging technology to provide more than 98% energy efficiency, a junction temperature of up to 175 °C, and extremely high reliability. The low on-resistance MOSFET provides a compact, thermally efficient package.

2. Develop various DC-DC converters to ensure high conversion efficiency of energy from one voltage level to another, such as from 48 V to 12 V, from 300 V to 48 V, from 12 V to 220 V, etc.
Active safety and autonomous driving
As people's awareness of safety continues to improve, active safety systems are increasingly being used in cars, especially ADAS equipped with various sensors, which has made great progress and is developing rapidly. For such applications, ON Semiconductor provides solutions such as image sensors and intelligent passive sensors that fully comply with the automotive safety integrity level (ASIL B) ISO26262.
Image sensors are used in vision applications (such as reversing images and panoramic parking image systems), ADAS applications (such as blind spot detection, lane departure warning, collision avoidance and active cruise control, pedestrian detection, traffic sign recognition), as well as new fatigue detection, gesture recognition (in the cabin) and mirror replacement. ON Semiconductor has more than 10 years of experience in providing CMOS image sensors to the automotive market. It is the world's largest ADAS supplier with the largest market share. The image sensors it provides have excellent low-light performance, high-quality image distortion correction capabilities, high dynamic range (HDR), automotive-grade operating temperature range, and high reliability and quality. For example, the company's latest CMOS image sensor AR0136AT, the first to use back-illuminated (BSI) sensor technology, provides best-in-class performance, 4 times better low-light signal-to-noise ratio than the current market-leading AR0132AT, 40% increase in visible light sensitivity, and more than 60% improvement in near-infrared (NIR) performance. The company's new series of image coprocessors, AP020x, make HDR 1080p automotive imaging systems possible, and together with the company's high-performance 2-megapixel sensors such as the AR0230AT and 1-megapixel sensors such as the AR0140AT, AR0132AT and AR0136AT, provide a comprehensive and complete reversing imaging and panoramic parking imaging solution.

ON Semiconductor's solutions for automotive reversing images also include 2 MHz switching power supplies (SMPS) such as NCV890201MWTXG and NCV898031D1R2G, low-dropout regulators (LDO) such as NCV8703 and NCV8705, switching MOSFETs such as NVTFS5116PL (u8FL) and BVSS84L (SOT23), digital transistors such as SDTC1xxEE, CAN transceivers such as NCV7356 and NCV7341, image processors such as AP0100AT, video signal processors such as LC749000, EEPROMs such as CAV25256 (SPI) and CAV24C256 (I2C), logic products such as NL17SZxx and ESD, etc.
Smart passive sensors are mainly used to detect seats and sense liquid levels. ON Semiconductor's smart passive sensor solution uses a pioneering, ultra-high frequency RFID sensor tag, including a smart sensor IC called Magnus, and a printable antenna to support wireless sensing of temperature, humidity, pressure and distance, all without the need for an external power supply. In seat detection applications, the solution combines human body detection elements with standard weight detection to provide seat belt warning indications and close/open airbags, solving the challenge that today's automotive seat detection systems do not provide human body detection, but only pressure detection; in terms of sensing liquid levels, the solution is used to sense liquid levels outside the container, eliminating the sensitive electronic and mechanical devices in today's automotive fuel tanks.
LED lighting
Thanks to the advantages of LED such as small size, design flexibility, and energy-saving and high efficiency, LED headlights are expected to become a trend in automotive lighting, used to create unique shapes, achieve energy savings, and enhance safety advantages.
ON Semiconductor provides a series of LED drivers and stepper motor drivers for such applications, such as the fully integrated addressable LIN RGB (red, green and blue) single-chip solution NCV7430, which can output 16 million different colors through LIN commands for security features such as vehicle anti-theft and creating a personalized interior atmosphere. This solution saves circuit board space compared to the current solution consisting of a microcontroller and LIN-SBC on the market, and can use optional ballast control pins to make thermal management simpler. Its separate LIN node obtains the address through pre-programming or LIN commands, making the design flexible and reducing costs; the innovative LED headlight lighting solution NCV78663 uses a power ballast and a dual LED driver to provide segmented glare-free high beams, integrates intelligent electronics, and uses sensors, cameras and navigation control to allow the car to automatically adapt to various road conditions and enhance safety by maximizing the lighting area. It supports a modular design platform, which is easy to design and cost-effective; in response to the trend that AFS will move from motor control to the use of pixel/matrix technology, ON Semiconductor provides all semiconductor components (except microcontrollers) that make up the LED AFS pixel/matrix system, such as LED ASSP, FET, LDO, rectifier, logic, Zener, protection, etc.
connect
From the perspective of user experience, driving efficiency, active safety, etc., the internal and external nodes of the car must be connected into an organic network, especially the navigation system and navigation applications based on location services, such as real-time traffic information, parking space information, restaurant, gas station information, etc. In the car, the various subsystems must work more closely together and need to share information; in terms of car-to-car and car-to-other external systems, the exchange and sharing of information is even more important. ON Semiconductor provides a variety of bus transceivers and information processing units for these networks.
In addition, body and infotainment systems are also key areas of development for ON Semiconductor's automotive business to enhance driving comfort and entertainment.
