An Israeli company called StoreDot recently announced that relying on nanodot technology, the company has developed battery technology that can fully charge mobile phones in tens of seconds and electric vehicles in minutes.
StoreDot's ultra-fast charging relies on nanodot technology, an organic nanocrystal material. Nanodots change the way batteries work, with super storage capacity and the ability to significantly increase charging speed. Batteries made of this material are like ultra-dense sponges that can absorb and lock large amounts of electricity faster.
Currently, the prototype of this charger is close to the size of a PC charger and cannot be used in smartphones. The company plans to complete the miniaturization of the battery in 2016 and launch a new slim battery that can adapt to the needs of mobile phones and can charge a smartphone for a day in 30 seconds.
It should be noted that nanodot technology is actually used in mobile phone batteries rather than chargers. StoreDot said that nanodot technology can make the battery be charged at an extremely fast speed while maintaining a discharge speed similar to that of traditional lithium batteries. When using nanodot batteries instead of lithium batteries, corresponding chargers are naturally required.
The company, whose investors include Roman Abramovich, a Russian billionaire and owner of Chelsea football team, has raised $48 million in two rounds of funding from a leading mobile phone manufacturer. StoreDot founder and CEO Doron Myersdorf declined to name the phone manufacturer, saying only that it is from Asia.
StoreDot said that in the future, fast-charging mobile phones will cost $100 to $150 (about RMB 613-920) more than ordinary mobile phones, and the final version of the battery will be able to support 1,500 charge and discharge cycles, enough to support three years of use.
Milsdorf also hopes to apply this technology to electric vehicles, fully charging them in two or three minutes.
