Beijing, October 26, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- On October 24, CATL launched the world's first hybrid battery with a pure electric range of more than 400 kilometers and 4C supercharging in Beijing - the CATL Xiaoyao Super Hybrid Battery, fully opening the era of "large power" hybrid.

As hybrid models gradually become the main force in the new energy vehicle market, the negative experience of pure electric driving of hybrid models has become increasingly prominent. Pain points such as short battery life, slow energy replenishment, and low-temperature attenuation have become key challenges.

CATL's Xiaoyao super hybrid battery allows car owners to completely bid farewell to the trouble of frequent charging caused by the short pure electric range of traditional hybrid models, and achieve "charge once, commute for a week"; on the other hand, CATL Xiaoyao solves the energy replenishment anxiety of hybrid car owners with its excellent performance of "charging for 10 minutes and replenishing over 280km".

Behind the impressive battery life and supercharging performance are continuous breakthroughs in technology research and development. Gao Huan, CTO of CATL's domestic passenger vehicle business unit, introduced the technical innovations of CATL's Xiaoyao super-hybrid battery at the press conference.

CATL's Xiaoyao battery uses positive electrode material surface modification technology, combined with an innovative high-voltage electrolyte formula to form a "nano-level protective layer", which effectively reduces the side reactions of the active layer. Highly active excited state particles are also introduced into the positive electrode material to greatly improve the transmission efficiency of lithium ions in the material. CATL has also built a high-precision model for all SOC scenarios, and the SOC control accuracy has been improved by 40%. Material innovation combined with BMS intelligent algorithm optimization has increased the overall pure electric utilization rate of CATL's Xiaoyao battery by more than 10%, achieving a pure electric range of more than 400km. In addition, CATL has created a multi-level power prediction control strategy for the battery by modeling the charging and discharging polarization characteristics of the battery, which has further improved the power performance of the hybrid vehicle by 20%.

In addition, CATL has also "replicated" the 4C supercharging technology on the CATL Xiaoyao battery, achieving "charging for 10 minutes and replenishing more than 280km". The positive electrode fast ion conductor coating technology, the negative electrode second-generation fast-charging graphite and new nano-coating technology, multi-gradient layered pole piece design and the new ultra-high conductivity electrolyte formula make the penetration of lithium ions "silky and smooth", allowing hybrid vehicles to enjoy the ultimate charging experience like pure electric vehicles.

CATL's sodium-ion battery technology has also been applied to the CATL Xiaoyao super hybrid battery, breaking the low-temperature limitations of new energy vehicles and enabling discharge in extremely cold environments of minus 40 degrees Celsius, charging in minus 30 degrees Celsius, and no difference in driving experience from minus 20 degrees Celsius to normal temperature.

In order to further improve the low-temperature performance of CATL's Xiaoyao batteries, CATL has made three technical innovations around sodium-ion battery technology.

Relying on CATL's pioneering AB battery system integration technology, CATL's Xiaoyao battery pack mixes, connects in series, and integrates in parallel sodium-ion batteries and lithium-ion batteries in a certain proportion and arrangement, achieving a 5% increase in low-temperature battery life. Secondly, CATL uses sodium-ion batteries as the SOC monitoring scale of the AB battery system to assist in calibrating the power of lithium-ion batteries, which improves the overall control accuracy of the system by 30% and increases the pure electric range by more than 10km. In view of the differences in low-temperature performance between lithium-ion batteries and sodium-ion batteries, CATL has also developed a full-temperature range accurate power calculation BMS technology, which provides targeted zoning management of different chemical systems in all-weather scenarios, effectively solving problems such as power prediction distortion or power performance degradation in harsh high and low temperature environments.

The high performance and strength of CATL's Xiaoyao super-hybrid battery are based on high reliability and high safety. Starting from raw material screening and molecular design, CATL has built a reliability management and evaluation system that includes multi-level protection structure, extreme manufacturing process, all-round testing and verification, and big data early warning.

At present, CATL Xiaoyao batteries have been successfully deployed in multiple car brands, including Ideal, Avita, Deep Blue, Qiyuan, and Nezha. It is expected that by 2025, nearly 30 hybrid models including Geely, Chery, GAC, and Lantu will be equipped with CATL Xiaoyao super hybrid batteries.
