Monitor speakers are the first choice for audiophiles, but for the first-time audiophiles of the working class, the high price of the speakers makes them stay away. Making speakers by yourself is only 1/3 of the price of similar finished speakers, and you can get the joy of making them successfully. The author used the T&T company's Excellence No. 1 monitor system kit to make a bookshelf speaker, which received unexpected results. The overall effect reached the Hi-End level, but the price was only 1/3 of the Dushi Swan M1 monitor box. Those who are interested may wish to try it.

T&T uses loose-pressed wool basins specially made in the UK. Whether it is the low-frequency lower limit or transient response, it is better than ordinary wool basins on the market (most of the domestic market is compressed wool fiber basins). Excellence No. 1 monitor speakers belong to the Hi-End system, with a luxurious and beautiful appearance and pure and sweet sound. The structure of the speaker is shown in Figure 1. The overall dimensions are 450×240×300mm. The left and right corners on the top of the box are not only decorative, but also improve the mid-high frequency characteristics.

Excellence No. 1 adopts a typical two-way frequency inverted structure, with a W-180D bullet wool cone for the mid-bass, an enlarged magnet, a 20mm long stroke, an ultra-large magnetic circuit structure, an integrated low-carbon T-iron, and a 6mm thick upper splint, which fully guarantees high power and dynamics, and overcomes the disadvantage of relatively low efficiency of the wool cone. Its aluminum bullet dust cap can effectively suppress the distortion caused by the resonant cavity, reduce the third harmonic distortion, and improve the mid-frequency characteristics. Compared with the plastic phase plug, aluminum has better heat dissipation performance. Since the bullet head is located in the center of the basin, it is completely separated from the sound basin and voice coil, which ensures the sound image positioning ability and spatial sense behind the speaker and improves the clarity of the tone. The W-180D cone uses a ceramic powder spray basin with good rigidity and moderate internal resistance, which makes the unit have a flat frequency response and low distortion, and has a good impulse response. The tweeter of Excellence No. 1 is H-600Q, which is a 28-core tweeter with transparent silk membrane and magnetic fluid cooling. It has a sensitivity of more than 90dB, delicate sound quality and excellent layering.

The crossover of Excellence No. 1 is shown in Figure 2. It adopts two-wire crossover input, and the inductors are hollow coils made of high-purity oxygen-free copper enameled wire. The key capacitors are all MKP high-quality polypropylene capacitors. The tweeter channel is connected in parallel with a "noise suppressor" at both ends of the main capacitor. Because it has positive temperature characteristics, it has an absorption effect when the high-frequency odd harmonic amplitude is large. At the input end of the speaker, an LC circuit composed of a small inductor and a small capacitor in series is connected in parallel to suppress interference movement. The main parameters of the speaker are as follows: sensitivity ≥89dB, carrying power ≥250W, total harmonic distortion <2%, and frequency response of about 40Hz~20kHz. The overall performance of the Excellence No. 1 speaker is good. Although it is a bookshelf speaker, the bass is quite full and has good explosive power. It is very suitable for playing classical music and symphony.
