Charge pumps, also known as switched capacitor voltage converters, are DC-DC converters that use so-called "fast" or "pumping" capacitors (rather than inductors or transformers) to store energy. They can increase or decrease the input voltage and can also be used to generate negative voltages. The internal FET switch array controls the charging and discharging of the fast capacitor in a certain way, so that the input voltage is multiplied or reduced by a certain factor (0.5, 2 or 3) to obtain the required output voltage. This special modulation process can guarantee an efficiency of up to 80%, and only external ceramic capacitors are required.
