The patent war between Samsung Display (SDC) and BOE is gradually evolving into a full-scale conflict in the supply chain. Samsung Electronics is rumored to be pushing to exclude BOE from the mobile phone and TV panel supply chain.

Korean media ET News quoted industry sources as saying that Samsung has recently stopped discussing matters related to BOE OLED panels for its 2024 mobile phone products. Samsung's Mobile Experience (MX) Division, which is responsible for the mobile phone business, has long cooperated with BOE in the past, and now it may completely interrupt procurement.

The conflict between the two companies stems from patent litigation. In December 2022, SDC filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), requesting that U.S. distributors be prohibited from importing domestic OLED panels that infringe SDC's patents. Although the investigation was aimed at distributors, it is reported that The designated products include panels produced by BOE. Subsequently, BOE filed a domestic lawsuit in May 2023 on the grounds that Samsung Electronics and SDC had infringed patents.

Samsung is one of BOE's major customers. Especially after SDC withdrew from the LCD business, LCD panels have become even more dependent on BOE. Faced with the conflict with BOE, it is said that Samsung is not limited to mobile phones, but also intends to significantly reduce the use of BOE LCD panels in TVs.

Samsung produces about 40 million TVs every year and is the world's largest TV manufacturer. If it takes major steps to restructure its supply chain, it will definitely bring changes to the display market. In the future, whether Samsung will transfer BOE’s LCD panel orders to LG Display (LGD), Sharp, AUO, etc., or whether it will use this as an opportunity to accelerate the conversion of its OLED TV business has attracted much attention.
