Zayed Sustainability Prize launches new awards category to accelerate climate solutions and protect planet for future generations

Beijing, China, March 29, 2023: The Zayed Sustainability Awards, the UAE’s global pioneer award to recognize excellence in sustainable development, has officially announced the launch of a special category called “Climate Action.” This new category aims to recognize and promote innovative solutions to combat climate change and protect the Earth’s natural resources.
The launch of the Climate Action category coincides with the UAE Year of Sustainability, a national initiative that aims to accelerate sustainable development across the country in line with the UAE’s national strategy. The new award category is being launched ahead of the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which will be held in the United Arab Emirates later this year.
His Excellency Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al-Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology of the UAE, Director-General of the Zayed Prize for Sustainable Development and President-elect of COP28, said: “As we commemorate the UAE Year of Sustainable Development and prepare to host COP28, At this time, it is more important than ever to recognize and support innovative solutions that protect the planet and people from the impacts of climate change. The UAE is committed to hosting a COP on solutions-focused actions aimed at promoting inclusive and sustainable development. , accelerating the adoption of policies to achieve climate mitigation, climate adaptation, climate finance and avoid climate losses, the Zayed Sustainability Prize’s new Climate Action Category reinforces this commitment and supports the deployment of solutions needed in today’s world. Keep the Paris Agreement alive and limit global warming to below 1.5 degrees Celsius.”
Lord Jaber added: “The Climate Action category is an important complement to the Prize’s mandate during this critical ‘Decade of Action’ and we look forward to receiving submissions from across the globe. The Zayed Sustainability Award was founded in 2008 as a tribute to the late Founding Father of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, for sustainable development and humanitarianism. The awards recognize and reward organizations and high schools that provide impactful, inspiring and innovative solutions in the health, food, energy, water, climate action and global high school categories.
The new Climate Action category will further expand the scope and impact of the award by rewarding solutions that protect and enhance the natural environment while addressing the urgent challenge of climate change. This includes organizations that promote climate adaptation, build resilience and deploy environmentally friendly solutions. The Zayed Sustainability Prize has been transforming lives for 15 years by promoting sustainable solutions in areas such as health, food, energy and water. Now, as the world's efforts to combat climate change intensify, the award will further expand innovative solutions to environmental problems and enable communities to build climate resilience through its specific Climate Action category.
The Zayed Sustainability Prize has become a global platform for promoting sustainable development, with winners and finalists coming from all corners of the planet. Now, the Zayed Prize for Sustainability will celebrate 15 years of delivering humanitarian impact around the world. The prize has been awarded to 106 recipients, improving the lives of more than 378 million people around the world.
The award awards $600,000 to each winner in the health, food, energy, water and climate action categories. The Global High School Group is divided into six global regions, and each school can apply for grants of up to $100,000 to launch or further expand its projects.
The launch of the ‘Climate Action’ category is expected to attract project submissions from around the world. The Zayed Sustainability Prize is soliciting entries from non-profit organizations and small and medium-sized enterprises from now until May 23, 2023. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Abu Dhabi.
