STMicroelectronics (STMicroelectronics) has launched a multi-sensor module capable of detecting five degrees of freedom. The new product integrates a three-axis digital accelerometer and a two-axis digital gyroscope in one device, which can improve the product's measurement accuracy and reliability, reduce size and cost, and create more new opportunities for high-precision motion detection in mobile phones, navigation systems, game consoles and a wide range of portable electronic devices.

ST's latest high-performance motion detection module can detect accelerations up to 16g and angular rates of up to 2000dps in pitch and yaw. The advanced mechanical sensing structure design ensures that the module has excellent symmetry and resistance to mechanical and thermal stress, the industry's best time and temperature stability, and achieves zero g and zero angular rate deviation and high sensitivity. The new module uses the same micromachining process as ST's motion sensors, which have sold 1.2 billion units so far.

The integration of five degrees of freedom in one device helps improve system robustness, which, combined with high temperature and mechanical stability and advanced power management features, makes ST's new multi-sensor module ideal for a wide range of consumer electronics and industrial applications.

These applications include enabling intuitive user interfaces in mobile phones, game consoles, printers and other smart consumer electronic devices; dead reckoning and map matching applications in advanced navigation systems; smart power saving and free-fall detection in portable electronics; and vibration monitoring and compensation.

To overcome the power consumption limitations of battery-powered portable devices, STMicroelectronics' multi-axis sensor modules support shutdown and sleep modes, built-in FIFO (first-in-first-out) memory modules, and do not require continuous communication between the sensor module and the host processor. The operating voltage range is 2.4V to 3.6V.

STMicroelectronics’ LSM320DL multi-sensor module is available now.
