Power semiconductor manufacturer ROHM said that US MidNite Solar is using ROHM's silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs to improve efficiency and reduce system costs. Products include: 600VDC to 48VDC 6000W MPPT (maximum power point tracking) solar charge controller, dual MPPT charge controller, battery-based charger/inverter and 120/240V inverter/charger.
“SiC power devices are more energy efficient than the silicon devices they replace, and the cost premium has been significantly reduced, allowing more applications to benefit from these devices, resulting in better system performance and value,” said Dr. Ming Su, technical marketing manager at Rohm Semiconductor.
Robin Gudgel, Engineering Manager at MidNite Solar, explains: “Silicon carbide solves a key challenge. The body diode of conventional silicon MOSFETs is very slow. As a result, charger designs that try to make the inverter run bidirectionally are very difficult. We were looking into combining diodes with IGBTs, but silicon carbide is a much better solution, and ROHM’s device doesn’t require any major design changes.”
MidNite Solar has incorporated ROHM’s 60mΩ RDS(on) SiC devices and new 30mΩ RDS(on) products into its new solar product range. Gudgel expects excellent reliability, better heat dissipation and simpler driving.
