O LED technology has been developing rapidly recently, mostly because it has the tendency to replace other flat panel displays. In fact, O LED has its unique advantages as a lighting source.
Organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) will be the best lighting solution for energy saving and eye and physiological safety. OLED lighting technology has more than a dozen excellent characteristics and is the best lighting source in human history. Energy-saving lighting is a necessary choice without harming the eyes and body, but lighting suitable for daytime work may not be suitable for resting at night. Recent medical discoveries show that lighting at night is not necessarily good for the eyes, especially in the past 30 years, since the large-scale use of electronic lighting equipment at night, especially the strong white light or blue light, has caused a rapid increase in breast cancer and colon cancer in terms of human health, which has attracted the attention of advanced countries.
Led by the European Union, many countries have clearly outlined a timetable for banning incandescent bulbs year by year. Since incandescent bulbs only produce 15 lumens per watt of energy, they will gradually become history. Incandescent bulbs have been around for 130 years, which is a relatively short period of time compared to candles. Although fluorescent tubes, which were invented 60 years ago, now have an energy efficiency of 60 to 90 lumens per watt, in addition to saving energy, they also have many other shortcomings and possible problems that deserve attention.
However, before incandescent bulbs are forced to be phased out by policy, we still haven’t seen the emergence of more perfect lighting source technology. Although incandescent bulb lighting technology consumes more power and generates high heat, it also has the advantages of continuous and gentle spectrum, no flicker, and eye protection. At present, although fluorescent lamps save power, they are about to be phased out due to problems such as mercury, ultraviolet rays, intermittent spectrum spikes and flicker.
Now, problems caused by poor lighting are emerging one by one. How to accelerate the pace of healthy and energy-saving lighting technology and product practical research and development is a challenge facing scientists. The following will compare existing electronic lighting technologies and briefly describe the characteristics of O LED lighting that take into account energy saving, health and quality.
OLED with adjustable color temperature/high color rendering has obvious advantages
According to the estimation of Junji Kido, a professor at the Institute of Science and Technology of Yamagata University in Japan, the use of OLED lighting is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 6.7 million tons, or about 2.3%, by 2020. The energy efficiency of OLED exceeds that of traditional incandescent bulbs and is close to that of fluorescent tubes. Due to its energy-saving potential, the U.S. Department of Energy invested $30 million per year in research and development as early as 2000. The world's three largest lighting manufacturers, Philips, Osram, and GE, are also involved in the research of OLED lighting applications. In 2010, Japan's Lumiotech also launched a trial product.
In terms of human health, unlike energy-saving light bulbs, OLED does not contain mercury and has no ultraviolet rays. Fluorescent lamps use mercury vapor to generate ultraviolet rays, which then excite phosphors to emit light. Some light-emitting diodes (LEDs) also use ultraviolet rays to excite visible light and then form white light. If ultraviolet rays are exposed, they will harm the human eye. Moreover, OLED only needs a few small batteries or a 9-volt square battery to drive the light. Because of its low voltage, it can be safely carried with you.
In 2009, National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan published a sunlight-like OLED with a color temperature ranging from 2,000 to 8,000K, covering 3,000K morning sunlight, 5,500K midday sunlight, and 2,500K sunset sunlight (Figure 1). The different light colors and color temperatures emitted by the sun at sunrise, sunset, and daytime not only give people different atmospheric feelings, but also regulate the physiological clocks and rhythms of humans and organisms (Figure 2). Light with low brightness and color temperature does not hinder the secretion of melatonin, which can inhibit tumors.
Whether it is LED, incandescent bulb or fluorescent tube, there are glare problems, among which LED is the most serious. OLED is a natural flat light source, without the problem of concentrated glare. It is suitable for indoor or in-car lighting, and it will not flicker. It can also be used as an eye protection lamp. On the other hand, LED or fluorescent tube has the problem of spiky light color, among which fluorescent lamp is the most obvious, but OLED light color is soft and closer to natural light (Figure 3). In addition, incandescent bulbs use 95% of electricity to generate heat and infrared light, so it is hot light. In contrast, because the OLED spectrum can be adjusted, it almost does not emit infrared light, so it is also called cold light. At the same time, LED, a point light source, has a serious high heat problem, which will lead to a decrease in the luminous efficiency of the component, deterioration of the packaging glue material and a shortened service life. OLED is in the form of a thin sheet and is easier to dissipate heat.
