In terms of the cost of LED backlight and traditional CCFL backlight, now that LED backlight technology has become mainstream, it has been recognized by consumers for its advantages such as no mercury, low energy consumption, good color, and long life. At the same time, the cost of small-size LED backlight has gradually dropped to a price very close to that of CCFL backlight. For consumers, having an energy-saving , environmentally friendly and affordable product will naturally be sought after by consumers.
LED backlight technology has gradually shown strong application prospects with its unique and overwhelming advantages. So, let's briefly summarize the advantages of LED backlight technology compared with CCFL backlight technology.
LED backlight technology: ten leading advantages
As the backlight source of LCD, LED has many unique advantages over traditional backlight technology in addition to the advantages in color gamut, which can be summarized into ten aspects:
1) LED backlight has a better color gamut. Its color expression is stronger than CCFL backlight, which can make up for the insufficient number of display colors of LCD technology and achieve better color reproduction.
2) The life of LED can be up to 100,000 hours. Even if it is used continuously for 10 hours a day, it can be used continuously for 27 years, which greatly extends the life of LCD TV and has an overwhelming advantage over plasma technology.
3) Wide brightness adjustment range. It is easy to achieve LED power control, unlike CCFL, which has a threshold for minimum brightness. Therefore, whether in bright outdoors or in a dark room, users can easily adjust the brightness of the display device to the most pleasing state.
4) Perfect motion images. Traditional CCFL lamps have a low flickering frequency, which may cause screen jitter when displaying dynamic scenes. LED backlight can flexibly adjust the light frequency, and the frequency is much higher than CCFL, so it can perfectly present motion images.
5) Real-time color management. Since red, green and blue light up independently, it is easy to precisely control the current display color characteristics.
6) Adjustable backlight white balance while maintaining overall contrast. When the user's video source switches between a computer and a DVD player, the white balance can be easily adjusted between 9600K and 6500K without sacrificing brightness and contrast.
7) It can provide continuous array light source for large screens. LED is a planar light source. The most basic light-emitting unit is a square with a side length of 3~5mm. After packaging, it is very easy to combine together to form a surface light source of a given area. It has good brightness uniformity. If it is used as a backlight source for LCD TVs, the auxiliary optical components required can be made very simple, and the screen brightness uniformity is even better.
8) Safety. LED uses a low-voltage power supply of 5~24V , which is very safe, and the design of the power supply module is also quite simple.
9) Environmental protection. LED light sources do not produce any radiation, nor do they contain toxic substances such as mercury, so they can be said to be green and environmentally friendly light sources.
10) Earthquake resistance. The planar structure gives the LED a stable internal structure and excellent earthquake resistance.
One of the advantages of LED backlight technology: energy saving and environmental protection
LED backlight is the abbreviation of Light Emitting Diode, which is a light-emitting device that can directly convert electrical energy into light energy. As a new generation of LCD backlight panel, it has the outstanding characteristics of low power consumption, high brightness and long life.
CCLF (cold cathode lamp) is the main element of LCD backlight, which is mercury, which is also known as mercury, and this element is undoubtedly a substance harmful to the human body.
Compared with traditional CCFL backlight, LED backlight can save more than 40% energy compared with the same specification CCFL backlight civilian products, which has a significant improvement in energy saving. In addition, mercury in CCFL backlight is a substance that is quite harmful to the environment, but LED backlight does not contain this harmful substance, which is more beneficial to the environment.
The second advantage of LED backlight technology: light and elegant
LED backlight is composed of many grid-shaped semiconductors, each "grid" has an LED semiconductor, so that the light source can be successfully planarized. Its planarized light source not only has excellent brightness uniformity, but also does not require complex light path design. In this way, the thickness of the LCD can be made thinner and lighter, and at the same time it can have higher reliability and stability.
Traditional CCFL is a tubular light source. To evenly distribute the light it emits to every area of the panel requires quite complex auxiliary components. The thickness of the screen is also difficult to control. As the panel increases, multiple light sources must be used, which further increases the complexity and cost of the design. Large-screen LCD TVs are more sensitive to this. For example, for LCD or TV products larger than 50 inches, the cost of the direct-type CCFL backlight module may account for more than half of the panel cost.
LED backlight technology advantage 3: ultra-wide color gamut
LED backlight has the characteristic of more uniform light emission and is far superior to CCFL backlight in color expression. It can make up for the insufficient number of display colors in LCD technology, easily achieve NTSC118% or even higher wide color gamut, and let LCD monitors truly restore the bright colors in the colorful nature.
Traditional CCFL backlight technology, due to the limitation of fluorescent materials, has weak red light rendering ability of the lamp tube, and the color mixing effect of the matching color filter is also poor, which can only achieve NTSC65-75% of the NTSC color area. Even by using improved CCFL light sources, it can only achieve a color gamut range of about 90% of the NTSC ratio, thus affecting the image quality.
LED backlight technology advantage 4: ultra-long life
The service life of LED backlight can be up to 100,000 hours, and even if it is used continuously for 10 hours a day, it can be used continuously for 27 years. Therefore, after a long period of use, the brightness attenuation of LCD monitors or LCD TVs using LED backlights is better than that of CCFL backlights.
The service life of ordinary CCFL backlight is about 25,000 hours, and the luminous life of the latest top CCFL backlight is only 60,000 hours. At the end of the service life, the brightness of the LCD will drop significantly, and the CCFL backlight module of the LCD has to be replaced. LED backlight has no such problem at all. At present, the actual service life of white LED backlight is 50,000 to 100,000 hours, which is basically the same as the service life of LCD display, and there is still potential for further improvement. Even if it is used 24 hours a day, it is enough to use for 5 years. Therefore, the luminous life of LED backlight far exceeds that of CCFL backlight.
Advantage 5 of LED backlight technology: high brightness
LED backlight has a wide brightness adjustment range and can flexibly adjust the light emission frequency, which is much higher than CCFL backlight, so it can perfectly present motion pictures. However, the flickering light emission frequency of traditional CCFL backlight tubes is low, which may cause jumpy pictures when presenting dynamic scenes.
As a passive display device, LCD does not emit light by itself. It relies on the backlight to transmit light through the display panel to display graphics and images. Therefore, the backlight technology directly affects the image quality of LCD TV . Traditional LCDs usually use cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL) as light sources, and it is CCFL that causes the color of LCDs to be not rich enough and the color reproduction is poor.
LED backlight technology advantage 6: adjustable white balance
LED backlight can adjust the backlight white balance while maintaining the overall contrast. When the user's video source switches between computer and DVD player, the white balance can be easily adjusted between 9600K and 6500K without sacrificing brightness and contrast.
A white balance adjustment method based on RGB tricolor LED backlight includes: when the display is independently running, when the backlight is adjusted to a new brightness level, reading the value of the temperature sensor on the backlight board, if the actual value of the current color sensor is larger than the standard value, reducing the current duty cycle of the lamp a little. Otherwise, increasing the current duty cycle of the lamp a little. In order to obtain the standard value of the driving current duty cycle and the color sensor, a particle swarm algorithm is used. The advantage is that the white balance adjustment under a wide temperature range is automatically performed, the response speed is improved, the labor intensity of people is reduced, and the efficiency is improved.
LED backlight technology advantage seven: ultra-high contrast
Compared with traditional CCFL fluorescent lamp backlight, LED backlight can further improve the uniformity of light emission. With LED supporting multi-point control, the contrast of LED backlight display can be greatly improved to 1 million:1.
In simple terms, contrast is the same as full on/full off contrast, which is also the ratio of the brightness displayed when the test monitor receives a full white signal to the brightness of the full black signal display. Unlike full on/full off contrast, the monitor will adjust the brightness of the backlight tube to make the brightness displayed when receiving a full white signal higher and the brightness of the display receiving a full black signal lower, thus reaching a larger value.
Driven by the LCD market, the LED backlight industry is booming. With the continuous improvement of display technology, the huge LED market is destined to develop it into a huge industry.
After years of development, the LED display industry has gradually matured and its application areas have been continuously expanded. According to recent statistics, there are more than 140 companies in the domestic LED industry with an annual output value of over 100 million yuan, which fully proves that the market share of LED displays has risen.
