According to foreign media reports on April 14, Microsoft has notified some Outlook mailbox users that hackers were able to access their accounts earlier this year. Microsoft discovered that the proxy credentials supporting the webmail service were attacked, which allowed hackers to access certain accounts without authorization between January 1 and March 28, 2019.

Microsoft said that the hacker's intrusion may cause the leakage of folder names and subject lines in some users' email mailboxes, but the specific content and attachments of the emails are not affected. It is not clear how many users are affected by the hacker's behavior, nor is it clear who initiated the illegal access to other accounts.

Although the hackers were unable to steal login details and other personal information in this intrusion, Microsoft still recommends that affected users reset their passwords. "Microsoft regrets any inconvenience this issue has caused," Microsoft said. "Please rest assured that Microsoft takes data protection very seriously and has engaged its internal security and privacy teams to investigate and resolve the issue, as well as further strengthen systems and processes to prevent this from happening again."
