The principle circuit for measuring resistance is shown in Figure 1-6. It consists of a meter head, a shunt resistor, and a dry current. The resistor to be measured is connected to the "+" and "-" terminals (note that the external "+" terminal is the negative terminal of the battery in the meter). By changing the position of the range switch, the size of the shunt resistor can be changed, thereby changing the range of the resistance. The range switch in Figure 1-6 is set to the R×10 position, and the ohm number read at this time should be ×10. Since the scale of the measuring resistor is uneven, the resistor to be measured should be located at the center of the scale during measurement, otherwise the range should be changed.
Obviously, when using a multimeter to measure resistance, a 1.5V dry battery should be placed in the multimeter. If the dry battery voltage drops, it will affect the accuracy of the measurement. Therefore, an ohm zero adjustment knob is set on the multimeter. Before measuring resistance, the "+" and "-" test leads should be short-circuited so that the pointer points to 0Ω before measurement can be carried out.
