Connect the red probe of the multimeter to one pole of the diode and the black (COM) probe to the other pole.

When the measured forward voltage drop value is small, the red test lead (the positive pole of the battery in the meter) is connected to the positive pole, and the black test lead is connected to the negative pole.

Generally, the forward voltage drop of the diode displayed is: 0.55-0.700V for silicon diodes and 0.150-0.300V for germanium diodes. If it displays "0000", it means the tube is short-circuited; if it displays "overload", it means the diode is open-circuited or in reverse state (you can swap the test leads and test again).
