ON Semiconductor launches new Hyperlux image sensor series to lead the development of next-generation advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) to improve driving safety
Industry-leading 150 dB ultra-high dynamic range (HDR) and LED flicker reduction (LFM) capabilities make Hyperlux a key technology for safety-critical ADAS and autonomous driving (AD) solutions
May 11, 2023 - ON Semiconductor, a leader in smart power and smart sensing technology, launches the Hyperlux™ automotive image sensor series, which features a 2.1 µm pixel size, industry-leading 150 dB ultra-high dynamic range (HDR) and reduced The LED flashing (LFM) function provides high performance, high speed and advanced functionality within the automotive application temperature range, advancing the development of next-generation advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). HyperLux also supports a smooth transition to Level 2+ autonomous driving, which only requires the driver to take over driving when receiving a technical alert.
The Hyperlux family spans products from 3 megapixels (MP) to 8 megapixels and beyond for sensing and vision camera applications. With an HDR of 150 dB, it captures high-quality images in the most extreme lighting conditions without sacrificing low-light sensitivity. The platform’s LFM capabilities ensure that pulsed light sources do not flicker, thus avoiding machine vision issues caused by flicker.
Jiang Huohong, deputy general manager of Desay SV’s Intelligent Driving Sensor Business Unit, said: “The simultaneous HDR and LFM functions ensure that potential hazards can be identified in very dark or bright scenes, which is very important for ADAS and the cockpit. Applications are critical. Automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers adopting new Hyperlux technology can expect proven high performance in all operating conditions to enable more advanced safety and convenience.”
The Hyperlux product line features industry-leading ultra-low power consumption and small size, solidifying ON Semiconductor's position as the market leader in automotive grade image sensors. Compared with competing products, the power consumption of these automotive image sensors can be reduced by up to 30% and the footprint can be reduced by up to 28%, enabling energy-efficient designs with lower system material costs. As more electronic components such as image sensors are added to cars, the footprint of these electronic components needs to be as small as possible to fit the existing design of the car without destroying its interior and exterior styling.
"As cars become more connected and move toward autonomous driving, safety is more important than ever," said Chris Adams, vice president of ON Semiconductor's Automotive Sensing Division . "Our understanding of automotive applications and trends adds to the Our engineering expertise in image perception enables customers to develop next-generation products that move toward a Vision Zero strategy of completely eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries.”
Hyperlux is designed to meet the stringent security requirements of Automotive Safety Integrity Level D (ASIL D) systems, while integrated security provides maximum protection against cybersecurity threats. These sensors also provide dual output streams at different resolutions, allowing sensing and other functions to be performed simultaneously. Designers can benefit from its flexible architecture and use a single camera to perform multiple functions, reducing design time, risk and cost.
Samples of the first two sensors of the Hyperlux product series, AR0823AT and AR0341AT, are available for customers to experience in advance. ON Semiconductor has demonstrated Hyperlux and other smart power and sensing technologies at the AutoSens show in Detroit, which will be held from May 9 to 11, 2023, U.S. time .
