OmniVision Technologies releases first 200MP image sensor with 0.61μm pixel size
At the 2022 International Consumer Electronics Show, OmniVision Technologies released the OVB0B, a 200-megapixel resolution image sensor with a pixel size of only 0.61 microns. The product has a 16-in-1 CFA that can significantly improve preview and video quality, bringing changes to smartphone cameras.
LAS VEGAS – January 5, 2022 – OmniVision Technologies , a leading global developer of semiconductor solutions for advanced digital imaging, analog, touch and display technologies, today announced the OVB0B at CES 2022, a 200-megapixel resolution image sensor with a pixel size of only 0.61 microns for smartphone cameras. The OVB0B uses a unique 16-in-1 pixel merging to provide extremely high video and preview quality in 12.5-megapixel mode, especially in low-light environments. The OVB0B is the first 200-megapixel image sensor to offer 100% quad phase detection (QPD) technology for superior autofocus performance.
“Consumers want to capture high-resolution images and enjoy high-quality previews and videos. As a leader in image sensor technology, we have significantly advanced the performance level of mobile phone main cameras by applying PureCel® Plus-S die stacking technology,” said Arun Jayaseelan, product marketing manager at OmniVision Technologies. “With the new OVB0B, we are bringing ultra-high resolution and excellent low-light performance to premium smartphones while achieving a small package size.”
OVB0B uses the industry's first 0.61um 16-in-1 pixel merging technology, capable of shooting 4K/2K video with 16 times the sensitivity. In low-light environments, it achieves 12.5-megapixel performance (2.44 micron equivalent pixel size). The on-chip pixel restoration algorithm supports 50-megapixel video at 24 frames per second and 8K video shooting at 30 frames per second (1.22 micron equivalent performance). OVB0B also supports 12.5M resolution 30 frames per second three-exposure staggered HDR video output.
Jeffrey Mathews, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics , said: “The launch of the new 200MP image sensor for smartphone cameras promises to enable images captured in stunning detail. This sensor will meet the needs of handset vendors who are actively seeking enhanced cameras with high-resolution image sensors to differentiate their phones. We expect more than 40 million image sensors with resolutions exceeding 100MP will be shipped to smartphone vendors in 2022.”
OVB0B supports CPHY, DPHY and dual DOVDD (1.8V and 1.2V).
