Sony Semiconductor Israel, a supplier of cellular IoT chipsets, announced the launch of a new low-power NB2 chipset, Altair ALT1255. The ALT1255 supports 5G, has an integrated SIM (iSIM), user MCU, rich application layer and GSM/GPRS modem. The ALT1255 chipset enables device manufacturers to develop low-power, cost-sensitive connected devices worldwide to monitor, manage and control critical infrastructure, medical equipment, logistics trackers, and various LPWA applications.

The ALT1255 platform is available now and has been selected by key module vendors. It was developed in-house by Sony Semiconductor Israel based on the LTE-M/NB ALT1250 chipset and leverages its mature, widely accepted, globally certified NB/2G technology. The chipsets share software architecture, modem application and network layers, and APIs to enable fast and easy integration across the Altair product family.

The market shows a growing demand for feature-rich, fully integrated NB-IoT cellular chipsets with 2G fallback. ALT1255-based module designs will provide reliable connectivity for smart metering, logistics, telematics, and smart city applications.

The ALT1255's built-in iSIM removes barriers related to cost, size and power consumption, and adds a layer of security. The GSM/GPRS modem fills the gaps in LPWA network coverage and allows the use of future-proof technologies in countries with mixed 2G/NB coverage. In addition, the ALT1255 integrates a low-power ARM Cortex-M4 MCU, fully isolated from the modem functionality, designed to run a variety of IoT and sensing applications, as well as an adaptation layer to interconnect in existing ecosystems.

The solution provides out-of-the-box secure cloud connectivity using numerous industry-recognized communication protocols such as power-efficient CoAP and LWM2M.

As part of Sony's Altair product family, the ALT1255 is trusted by operators, iSIM ecosystem partners and developers designing IoT devices and has been widely recognized by the industry. The chipset has received Global Certification Forum (GCF) certification, which enables customers to accelerate module and device certification.
