6G

Only with a deep understanding of the propagation characteristics of electromagnetic waves,

Only in this way can the vision of Asia-terahertz communications envisioned by 6G be realized.

The new spectrum between 100 GHz and 330 GHz is gaining worldwide attention and has therefore been the focus of recent measurement activities by Rohde & Schwarz (hereinafter referred to as "R&S"). R&S's findings contribute to the ITU-R Working Party 5D (WP5D) report that will inform the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) World Wireless Conference 2023, where spectrum allocations for frequencies above 100GHz are expected to be discussed.

R&S actively and extensively supports the scientific research activities of 6G organizations, universities and research institutions, using its expertise and solutions in the field of test and measurement to pave the way for the next generation of wireless communications 6G. 6G is expected to be commercially deployed around 2030. Sub-terahertz generally marks the frequency range from 100GHz to 300GHz and represents a potential component of future 6G wireless communications standards.

Sub-terahertz technology enables maximum throughput in the 1Tbps level and extremely low latency, which are the foundation for fascinating new applications. The introduction of greater bandwidth will enable ultra-high throughput short-range communications and enable environmental awareness for object detection or next-generation gesture recognition to millimeter-level resolution. To fully realize the potential of this technology, it is crucial to understand the propagation characteristics of terahertz frequencies by performing channel sounding measurements.

Therefore, R&S conducted a channel measurement activity at the Rohde & Schwarz campus in Munich, Germany, in urban micro-area scenarios and indoor scenarios at 158 GHz and 300 GHz respectively. Preliminary results from this activity contributed to the ITU-R Working Group 5D (WP5D) report on "Technical feasibility of IMT in frequency bands above 100 GHz". The report aims to study and provide technical feasibility of mobile cellular technology in the frequency band above 92GHz (IMT refers to the International Mobile Telecommunications Standard). The report will solicit opinions at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) World Wireless Conference 2023 (WRC23), and the allocation of spectrum resources for frequencies above 100GHz is expected to be discussed at the subsequent WRC27 meeting. The current 3GPP channel model has only been verified to 100GHz. A critical first step in the 6G standardization process is to extend this channel model to higher frequencies.

The channel measurements are part of 6G research to better understand millimeter-wave and sub-millimeter wave (sub-terahertz and terahertz) mobile wireless channels, which cover a wide range of frequencies relevant to future 6G communications standards. In order to further develop and expand these research activities, R&S received an experimental license from the German Federal Network Agency Bundesnetzagentur. The license covers frequencies in the sub-terahertz region such as D-band (110 GHz - 170 GHz) and H-band (220 GHz - 330 GHz), but also W-band (75 GHz - 110 GHz), FR2 (millimeter wave) , FR3 (7 GHz - 24 GHz) and Germany's industrial frequency band 3.7 GHz - 3.8 GHz.
