Load switches are required for power distribution, power-on sequencing and power state transition in electrical appliances, which can reduce leakage current in standby mode, suppress surge current, and achieve power-off control. The function of the load switch is to turn the power rail on and off. Most load switches contain four pins: input voltage pin, output voltage pin, enable pin, and ground pin. When the device is enabled through the ON pin, the pass FET turns on, allowing current to flow from the input pin to the output pin, transferring power to the downstream circuitry.









The MOSFET gate driver IC (integrated circuit) TCK421G launched by Toshiba for 20V power lines is a load switch. It is the first product in the TCK42xG series. This series of devices is designed to control the gate voltage of an external N-channel MOSFET (based on the input voltage) and also has an overvoltage lockout function.




1. Analysis of device functional characteristics



The TCK421G MOSFET gate driver IC works with external N-channel MOSFETs connected back-to-back and is suitable for configuring power multiplexer circuits with reverse current blocking functionality or load switch circuits equipped with reverse current blocking functionality. Its built-in charge pump circuit supports a wide voltage input range of 2.7V to 28V, and can provide a stable voltage to the gate-source voltage of the external MOSFET through intermittent operation mode, thereby realizing large current switching.


The biggest highlight of TCK421G is that there is a protection circuit between the gate and source, which is also a necessary protection function to achieve high current switching. This product supports two types of gate output voltages, 5.6V and 10V, for matching different voltages of external MOSFETs. Both the overvoltage lockout voltage and the gate output voltage can be selected according to the user's equipment needs. In the future, Toshiba will continue to develop the TCK42xG series and plans to launch a total of six versions supporting input voltage overvoltage lockout functions from 5V to 24V. In addition to various overvoltage and undervoltage lockout functions, its standby current is less than 1µA.




2. Electrical Characteristics Analysis



TCK421G adopts WCSP6G package, one of the smallest packages in the industry, achieving a small and thin design (1.2mm × 0.8mm (typ), with a thickness of only 0.35mm (maximum), so it is suitable for power management circuits of various small devices , which facilitates high-density mounting and thus reduces the size of the equipment.

  • Low standby current: I Q(OFF) =0.9µA maximum at V IN =12V (except TCK424G, TCK425G)

  • 6-pin surface mount, width × length × height (mm) 1.2 × 0.8 × 0.35, weight 0.61mg (typical value)




3. Product application direction



TCK421G has been put on the market in large quantities and has been widely used. Its main application areas include wearable devices, smartphones, laptops, tablets, IoT devices, storage devices, USB power supplies and universal power supplies. Various mobile devices require power management and overvoltage protection functions. Since these devices are relatively small and powered by batteries, they have strict requirements on the standby current and size of the devices. TCK421G and the TCK42xG series planned to be launched in the future can exactly do this. Perfectly matches the above needs.
