Texas Instruments (TI) today introduced the first integrated circuit (IC) developed using a new proprietary integrated transformer technology : the UCC12050, a 500mW, high-efficiency, isolated DC/DC converter with the industry's lowest electromagnetic interference (EMI) . Its 2.65mm height helps designers reduce solution size ( 80% compared to discrete solutions and 60% compared to power modules ) and is twice as efficient as competing devices . Designed for industrial performance, the UCC12050's 5kVrms reinforced isolation and 1.2kVrms working voltage protect systems from high-voltage spikes such as those found in industrial transportation, grid infrastructure and medical equipment. TI's breakthrough integrated transformer technology enables high-density isolated DC/DC power conversion while maintaining low EMI . The single-package, surface-mount architecture provides designers with an easy-to-use, low-profile integrated circuit that reduces the bill of materials (BOM) and operates efficiently over a wide temperature range. EMI-optimized, low-capacitance transformers and quiet control schemes simplify EMI compliance while providing a reliable solution with a choice of enhanced or basic isolation.

Key features and benefits of UCC12050

Small size, increased power density: The UCC12050 uses a 16-pin small outline integrated circuit (SOIC) package with a size of 10.3 mm × 10.3 mm × 2.65 mm, and can provide 60% efficiency, which is twice that of competing devices of similar size and twice the power density of relatively isolated power modules. Using 0.5W in the new architecture can improve reliability, reduce the bill of materials, and simplify the board layout.

Lower EMI: The integrated transformer of the UCC12050 with lower primary to secondary capacitance optimizes EMI performance, and its quiet control scheme makes it easier for engineers to get their designs through the International Special Committee on Radio Interference (CISPR) 32 B Class EMI test because it leaves margin on a two-layer printed circuit board. This solution also eliminates external filter components such as low-dropout regulators and ferrite beads that are usually required to meet EMI certification, greatly reducing component selection and design time.

Reinforced Isolation, Wide Temperature Range: The reinforced isolation of the UCC12050 with 8mm creepage and clearance is used to protect and resist ground potential differences. Its high efficiency and wide operating temperature range (-40°C to 125°C) can provide more power under extreme conditions.

This new high-density isolated power converter is the latest industry-leading device in TI's power management portfolio, providing small size and ease of use for any industrial application requiring isolation. In addition, the new UCC12040 provides all the same benefits with 3kVrms basic isolation.

Packaging and availability

The UCC12050 and UCC12040 are available now in volume from TI and its authorized distributors in a 16-pin, 10.3mm x 10.3mm x 2.65-mm SOIC package. Engineers can evaluate the products using the UCC12050EVM-022 evaluation module.
