The 650V intelligent power module (IPM) integrates TI’s gallium nitride (GaN) technology to help inverters for home appliances and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems reach efficiencies of more than 99 percent.

Thanks to the high integration and efficiency of IPMs, engineers can reduce solution size by up to 55% by eliminating the need for external heat sinks.
Texas Instruments (TI) has introduced an advanced 650V three-phase GaN IPM for 250W motor drive applications. This new GaN IPM solves many of the design and performance trade-offs engineers typically face when designing large home appliances and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. The DRV7308 GaN IPM achieves more than 99% inverter efficiency, optimizes acoustic performance, reduces solution size and lowers system cost.
"Designers of high-voltage home appliances and HVAC systems are striving to achieve higher energy efficiency standards to support global environmental sustainability goals," said Nicole Navinsky, motor drive business unit manager at TI. "At the same time, they are working to meet consumer demands for reliable, quiet and compact systems. With TI's new GaN IPMs, engineers can design motor drive systems that meet all of these expectations and operate at exceptional efficiency."
Texas Instruments GaN helps improve system efficiency and reliability
Energy efficiency standards for appliances and HVAC systems are becoming increasingly stringent around the world, such as SEER, MEPS, Energy Star and Top Runner standards. The DRV7308 helps engineers meet these standards by leveraging GaN technology to achieve over 99% efficiency, improve thermal performance and reduce power consumption by 50% compared to existing solutions.
In addition, the DRV7308 achieves the industry's lowest dead time and low propagation delay (less than 200ns each), which enables higher pulse width modulation (PWM) switching frequencies , thereby reducing audible noise and system vibration. These advantages, combined with the DRV7308's higher power efficiency and integrated features, can also reduce motor heating issues, thereby improving system reliability and extending service life.
Strong integration and high power density reduce solution size and cost
Following the trend of miniaturization of home appliances, DRV7308 helps engineers develop smaller motor drive systems. The new IPM is based on GaN technology, has high power density, and uses a 12mm x 12mm package, making it the industry's ultra-small IPM for 150W to 250W motor drive applications. With excellent efficiency, the DRV7308 does not require an external heat sink, and the size of the motor drive inverter printed circuit board (PCB) can be reduced by up to 55% compared to similar IPM solutions. In addition, the integration of current detection amplifiers, protection functions, and inverter stages further reduces the size and cost of the solution.
This high-efficiency, high-voltage GaN IPM is a Texas Instruments innovation designed to help solve engineering challenges and transform motor design.
Texas Instruments' reliable high-voltage technology is on display at the Munich Shanghai Electronics Show
The DRV7308 GaN IPM will be exhibited at the Munich Shanghai Electronics Show. At that time, TI's technical experts will give a keynote speech at the forum concurrent with the event, "TI launches advanced GaN intelligent power modules to help build smaller and more efficient motor drives", and deeply interpret how TI helps the innovation and development of third-generation semiconductor technology and industrial chain.
