From sending New Year greetings over WeChat voice messages, recording karaoke, to smart stethoscopes, we deal with voice devices almost every day. Did you know that this widely used recording technology is mostly based on the thin-film electret microphone developed by Dr. James West?

Before him, recording and sharing sound had always been an expensive “magic technology” because condenser microphones required bulky and expensive high-voltage batteries.



Dr. James West and his research partners found a dielectric material called Teflon that has its own charge and can convert sound into electrical signals. Based on this, they invented an economical, compact and highly sensitive thin-film electret microphone.



Sound is full of stories and legends. Every time you capture a wonderful moment in life, you establish a connection with James West's unknown technological story.


Airports, subway stations, train stations... Scanning security technology makes us feel safe and secure in public places with a lot of problems, and this is largely due to Dr. Manijeh Razeghi's research on the application of terahertz waves.

Dr. Manijeh Razeghi discovered a new semiconductor material, indium phosphide, that enabled the previously "impossible" in a device as small as a lunch box: the use of terahertz at room temperature. Terahertz helps us to look inside objects and see the world as never before.

So, she and her husband, who was an electronics technician, built a complete radio control system: with multiple small holes at different heights, a two-way microphone, a remote door lock and an emergency button that could notify the police - this was the prototype of the modern home security system and the world's first surveillance camera.
