The World Athletics Championships is a competition where the world's top athletes compete to become world champions in athletics. Compared to the world championships in other sports, its history is not very long.
Before the World Championships in Athletics, the only event that could bring together top track and field athletes from around the world was the Olympic Games. Therefore, track and field professionals around the world called for a competition where the world's top track and field athletes could compete for the world championship in track and field. As the voices grew louder and louder, the World Athletics Federation (WA)* unanimously approved the "World Championships in Athletics" at a review committee held in Puerto Rico in 1978. The committee then decided to hold the first competition in Helsinki, Finland in August 1983.
Initially, the competition was held every four years, one year before the Olympic Games. However, after the 3rd World Championships in Tokyo (Japan), it was changed to every two years, one year before and one year after the Olympic Games. The World Athletics Championships have now been held 17 times around the world, and each time, top athletes from all over the world have participated, leaving countless people around the world with moving and exciting experiences.
TDK has been an official sponsor of the World Athletics Championships since the first World Championships in Helsinki in 1983, and the sponsorship will continue until 2029.
