Definition of Environmental IoT
Environmental Internet of Things
refers to new Internet of Things devices that mainly use environmental energy harvested from radio waves, light, motion, heat or any other available environmental energy, and driven by this.
Environmental IoT is an extension of the existing IoT . Ambient IoT devices have many of the same capabilities as IoT devices and target similar use cases, but it requires additional design choices to meet the needs of the solution. Because such devices are able to harvest energy from the environment, it is possible to develop lower-cost , smaller and maintenance-free ambient IoT devices, improving the scalability of IoT in existing and to-be-developed use cases. For example, OEMs may choose to build self-sufficient devices that use ambient energy to power themselves, aided by batteries or capacitors, depending on the use case and usage scenario; or they may further build devices with more flexible form factors and lower material costs. of battery-less devices.
Energy harvested from ambient sources can only produce a very small amount of electrical energy, which requires environmental IoT devices to be simpler and more energy efficient. One solution to this problem is to optimize radio protocols and add features such as embedded intelligence to reduce the frequency with which devices wake up and collect or transmit data.
This new type of IoT device contains
huge business opportunities
. Currently, ambient energy harvesting devices are mainly focused on short-range wireless connections, especially Bluetooth technology. Looking to the future, manufacturers generally want to understand and assist in the development of this new type of equipment. The 3rd Generation Partnership Project, which oversees cellular standards, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, which oversees
Wi-Fi
and networking standards, and the Bluetooth SIG, which oversees Bluetooth technology standards, are consulting with IoT developers to explore ways to promote the development of environmental IoT. This collaboration highlights the importance of cross-industry support and investment in defining and supporting Environmental IoT.
