STM32 Summit: Bringing together all AI solutions to solve new challenges in China
Artificial intelligence has a special meaning for this year's STM32 Summit ( April 26-27 , 2019 , Shenzhen, China ) . ST recently announced the launch of a toolkit , STM32Cube.AI, which has the potential to change the industry landscape, but decision makers and engineers must also have a clear understanding of how AI will specifically affect their products and operations. Terms such as machine learning, deep learning and neural networks are now common, but few people realize that these technologies must be put into use immediately to capture customers who have such needs now and provide them with smarter products. The STM32 Summit will provide a great opportunity to communicate with experts and engineers, where you can not only understand these trends, but also know how to implement them.
Seeing is believing, and live demonstrations are worth a thousand words, and we will showcase numerous application examples at the exhibition site. With more than 20 demonstration counters on the first day of the summit and 68 demonstrations on the second day, ST will showcase various products, applications and partner solutions with a focus on artificial intelligence, cloud computing and industrial applications. We will first explore the topic of artificial intelligence today, and the other two topics will be explored in depth in subsequent articles. Our team and partners will make some application demonstrations on site to help attendees understand the new milestone that the industry has recently crossed: artificial intelligence based on embedded systems . Engineers no longer need supercomputers to run pre-trained neural networks. They can perform complex tasks that required server-level components a few years ago through STM32 microcontrollers, all thanks to breakthrough optimization technology.
STM32Cube.AI, STM32H7: Running AI on embedded systems
Running Neural Networks on MCUs
The STM32Cube.AI presentation will be a highlight of the STM32 Summit presentations. STM32Cube.AI is a software toolkit that converts neural networks into STM32 MCU- specific code . Since its launch earlier this year, it is still the only product of its kind with a wide range of AI tools. One of the demo applications uses ST's FP-AI-SENSING1 function package, which can capture audio from the microphone of the SensorTile module and then process the signal to infer whether the sound is coming from indoors, outdoors or in the car. Similarly, we will also show tools for identifying human activities (running, walking, etc.) using machine learning and identifying objects or characters through image analysis. All of these programs will run on STM32 MCUs and prove that embedded systems have a special place in the field of artificial intelligence.
ST will also demonstrate the powerful performance of the new generation of MCUs. We will show how the STM32H7 handles the MJPEG rendering process, displaying smooth videos, and how the STM32H7 can run complex graphical user interfaces through TouchGFX technology, as we have seen on the driver assistance system Chris. In addition, as the popularity of smart speakers rises, voice recognition becomes more important. Therefore, we will introduce a system that uses voice commands to control Amazon Alexa in a smart home environment. This example also shows how AI can be integrated with smart applications. In this case, neural networks can better process audio, ensuring that the user's voice is always clear and not affected by environmental noise. Devices such as wearable devices, smart locks, and smart thermometers can also use machine learning to better predict user needs.
Orphe Track smart shoes, smart speakers and smart watches: bringing AI to customers
Being adopted by our partners is the best proof of the performance and practicality of our solutions. Orphe Track, the first smart shoe platform from Japanese company No New Folk Studio, was an eye-catching third-party demonstration at the STM32 Summit. Orphe Track is based on the sensor module Orphe Core, which uses ST components to accurately identify and track the user's foot movement data. In addition, it also uses artificial intelligence to identify activities and report on athletes' training to help them improve their body shape or lifestyle. The solution also has great application prospects in the medical field, for example, assisting patients in physical therapy. With ST's solution, the company is able to create an open framework to ensure that their customers can build relevant applications and stand out from the competition.
Among the many partners showcasing products and technologies, two Chinese partners will showcase their AI R&D results. The first is Open AI Lab , which will use the STM32 Summit to showcase its research and development results in the field of voice applications. Open AI Lab uses STM32F4 and STM32F7 microcontrollers to implement active noise cancellation, and ST is working with it to expand the functional scope of the solution. The second company is Mobvoi , which uses STM32F4 microcontrollers in wearable devices to implement advanced Chinese speech recognition and artificial intelligence to enhance the human-computer interaction experience. For example, the interface of the demonstration watch is more intuitive, making it easier for users to start applications and provide smart notifications.
The surprisingly high adoption rate of artificial intelligence in China
Artificial intelligence is already influencing the development of the Chinese market, and its impact may be faster than in other parts of the world. Customers need more smart devices and require smart devices such as smart locks, smart lights, smart speakers, smart watches and smartphones to integrate more intelligent functions, and companies are also moving in response. ST has a unique advantage in this field. We provide information acquisition hardware and data processing software libraries, as well as MCUs that run basic models and reasoning. In addition, since we have entered the era of device interconnection, engineers can reuse the tools they know to add these important new features to their designs. AI has huge appeal in the Chinese region, and ST already has the capabilities to develop the solutions needed for the next generation of smart devices, which we hope to present to everyone through the STM32 Summit.
