Leveraging sensor data for predictive maintenance and automation has become the latest trend in manufacturing and infrastructure. As this market trend develops, sensor devices that output sensing data are also evolving to provide accurate measurements and add value to the system through miniaturization, intelligence, and distributed processing.
Over the past 13 years, Renesas Electronics has shipped more than 1.3 billion RX series products. Among them, the RX-E MCU series is equipped with a 24-bit ΔΣ A/D converter optimized for industrial sensing equipment. The performance of the first RX23E-A MCU is equivalent to or better than that of a discrete ΔΣ A/D converter, so the RX23E-A has been widely used in measurement modules such as temperature controllers, weighing scales, and pressure gauges. A/D converter selection varies depending on application requirements. Therefore, Renesas Electronics has expanded its RX-E product portfolio and launched the RX23E-B MCU integrating a higher-performance ΔΣ A/D converter .

The main differences between the RX23E-A and RX23E-B are the data rate and noise performance of the built-in 24-bit ΔΣ A/D converter. The RX23E-A performs strongly in low-speed applications and is now widely used in many applications such as temperature measurement (thermocouples and RTDs), strain measurement (weight, force, pressure) and gas analysis. On the other hand, the high-speed performance and noise performance of RX23E-B have been improved, reaching the mid-to-high-speed range, and can support applications with such speed requirements. The maximum data transfer rate is 125kSPS, which is high speed among ΔΣ A/D converters and is 8 times faster than RX23E-A. The RMS noise of RX23E-B is also reduced to about one-third of that of RX23E-A. In addition to speed and noise, the RX23E-B also features a 16-bit D/A converter and +/-10V analog input.

Among the medium and high-speed applications targeted by the product, there are different categories of applications such as data acquisition (DAQ) and force sensors. These applications require support for measurements as fast as 10 microseconds (equivalent to 100kSPS) and require high-speed and low-noise performance. RX23E-B can fully meet the standard specifications required for such applications.

RX23E-B expands the product portfolio and provides users with a wider range of choices, so users can choose the most suitable product based on the required specifications. ΔΣ A/D converters are available in data rates from 125kSPS to 31.25kSP. Users can choose from 40-pin to 100-pin packages, including a 5.5×5.5mm 100-pin BGA package for compact applications.

Despite the technical differences between the RX23E-A and RX23E-B, the two devices share essentially the same philosophy in providing new added value such as miniaturization and distributed processing.
The Renesas RX23E-B Solution Starter Kit (RSSK) includes QE for AFE, a GUI-based tool that allows you to immediately start evaluating AFE without software development and can also be used for application evaluation.
