Thanks to the cooperation between cloud providers and device vendors, MCU firmware upgrades based on over-the-air (OTA) technology and implemented through cloud services now have a simple and quickly deployable integration environment.

The solution so far has been to enable the MCU to connect directly to a cloud service such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) via the Internet to enable firmware upgrades.

However, in reality, in addition to MCUs directly connected to the Internet, there are many application examples that use multiple MCUs (secondary MCUs) to build the same embedded system.

For such a system, continuous firmware upgrades of the secondary MCU are required to continuously improve services and reduce security risks.

In this context, the Renesas RX Cloud Connect Solution Development Team has begun to provide sample code that can use AWS IoT service solutions to perform OTA firmware upgrades even in secondary MCUs that are not directly connected to the Internet. The relevant sample code can be downloaded from the following link.

In this demonstration, you can use Quick-Connect IoT to install sensor measurement functions on the secondary MCU, and then use the AWS IoT service to upgrade the secondary MCU firmware through OTA technology to add the type of measurable sensors.

The following is a brief introduction to the process of OTA processing using the AWS cloud.

OTA processing performed on AWS Direct MCU is a mechanism to control its own (first-level MCU) hardware through the OTA Platform Abstraction Layer (PAL) provided by the company. (lower left)

Using this mechanism, you can add a PAL different from your own OTA application, communicate with the secondary MCU and transmit OTA instructions to implement OTA of the secondary MCU. (bottom right picture)

In addition, Renesas also provides a driver (FWUP FIT module) for performing secondary MCU-side OTA to further reduce the OTA installation load.

The demonstration in the link above is implemented by extending the FWUP FIT module. Like other drivers, it is free to use.

In addition, the switch between the PAL for OTA of the own (primary MCU) and the PAL for OTA of the secondary MCU can be set using variables when issuing OTA processing instructions on the AWS side.

Renesas will continue to provide solutions that make IoT development easy. Stay tuned!
