Low voltage circuit breakers are industrial and civil circuit breakers below 1500 V, including frame circuit breakers (ACB), molded case circuit breakers (MCCB), miniature circuit breakers (MCB), residual current devices (RCD), etc.

An electronic trip unit (ETU) is a programmable device that measures and monitors the current flowing through a circuit breaker and issues a trip signal at a specific time.

In modern low-voltage power distribution systems, more communication/intelligent functions are required to achieve higher-level system features (such as regional interlocking), so microprocessor-based electronic control units are becoming more and more popular in low-voltage switchgear/circuit breaker systems. ADI provides you with a simple low-voltage circuit breaker ETU system solution, which is now free for everyone to download~

ADI System Solutions

The power management IC ADP2450 is a special customized product of ADI, designed for low-voltage circuit breakers such as MCCB and ACB. Ideally, an MCU + ADP2450 and some passive components can build a complete ETU system. Therefore, for low-voltage circuit breaker applications, ADP2450 can be said to be a supporting device for MCU.

The main features of ADP2450 are described as follows

  • A low-power shunt boost controller converts the current source (output of the current transformer) into a voltage source. In addition, it has a power detection circuit that allows flexible setting of system-level startup current and hysteresis;

  • A 36 V high voltage input buck regulator can effectively regulate the voltage and output 3.3 V/ 5 V/ adjustable output for MCU and signal conditioning circuits. The output current can reach up to 500 mA;

  • An integrated power supply monitoring circuit provides a safe system-level reset function;

  • The ADP2450 integrates four programmable gain amplifiers (PGAs) that provide 15 different gain setting options. The PGA can also support two different topologies (inverting and differential input modes) to connect different CT topologies (single coil or dual coil);

  • There is also a general-purpose operational amplifier inside that can be used as a signal amplifier for ground fault, leakage/residual current detection or other purposes;

  • There are 4 analog trip units with programmable thresholds inside, which can be used to implement the MCR (Match Current Trip) function of ACB. The analog trip unit supports single-coil and double-coil user housings based on different packaging models;

  • At the same time, a power drive circuit for an actuator is integrated;

  • Enhanced temperature range covers –40°C to +125°C;

  • The PGA inputs feature ±8 V OVP and 4 kV ESD protection (HBM) to provide a higher level of system protection .
