Yao class star Chen Lijie's latest destination is now clear:

Starting from the fall of 2025, he will be an assistant professor of EECS at the University of California, Berkeley.

The relevant information has been displayed on his official homepage:

Chen Lijie was born in 1995. He is a well-known alumnus of Tsinghua University's Yao Class, the winner of Tsinghua's Special Scholarship in 2016, and the first Chinese undergraduate to publish a paper at the top theoretical computer conference FOCS.

In 2022, after graduating with a Ph.D. from MIT, Chen Lijie applied for the UC Berkeley Miller Fellowship and was successfully accepted, becoming a Miller postdoctoral researcher at the school.

The Miller Fellowship is designed for outstanding young scientists who have recently or are about to receive a doctorate, and is awarded to only 8-10 people each year.

From the world's number one in IOI to a computer theory scientist

Anyone who has paid attention to the Informatics Olympiad must be familiar with the name Chen Lijie:

In May 2011, 16-year-old Chen Lijie won first place in the Zhejiang Provincial Trial of the National Youth Informatics Competition (NOI), and obtained full marks in the second test;

In August of the same year, Chen Lijie won the NOI gold medal with the fourth place in the country and was admitted to Tsinghua University.

At the age of 18, he won the gold medal in the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) with the world's first place.

In the official report of Tsinghua University, a contestant of the same period also revealed such interesting anecdotes:

At the competition that year, there were often contestants who came to take photos with Chen Lijie. "I remember everyone was lining up to get his autograph and take photos."

Since his sophomore year, Chen Lijie has shifted his focus from competitions to scientific research, and has also taken the graduate course "Advanced Theoretical Computer Science," in which he scored a perfect 100.

During his undergraduate studies at Tsinghua University, his name began to appear at top theoretical computer conferences.

In 2017, Chen Lijie published a paper at the annual Symposium on Foundations of Computer Science ( FOCS ), solving an important problem in the field of computational complexity. He also became the first Chinese undergraduate to publish a paper at FOCS.

ps Top theoretical computer conferences such as STOC and FOCS are recognized in the computer science circle as being difficult and valuable.

In 2019, he won the DannyLewin Best Student Paper Award at another top theoretical computer conference , STOC 2019.

In the same year, at FOCS 2019, Chen Lijie published three papers in one go and also won the Best Student Paper Award.

From this year on, Chen Lijie began to become a regular at STOC and FOCS. For example, in 2023, he had three first-author papers selected for FOCS 2023, and one paper selected for STOC 2023. This year, he also won one paper each in FOCS and STOC.

In terms of research direction, Chen Lijie is currently focusing on classical and quantum computing complexity theory, and has also published papers on quantum science this year.

Chen Lijie once said:

I want to be a theoretical computer scientist, become a wave in the golden age, and contribute to human wisdom.

Now, he has taken a new step on this journey.

One More Thing

Chen Lijie won the Tsinghua University Undergraduate Special Scholarship in 2016, and his special award defense became very popular that year, with netizens jokingly calling it a classic scene of "the mouth cannot keep up with the brain."
